I would suggest that you need to play both games in the series so far.

I finished Mass Effect again last week for the fifth time and I was still finding small occurances I hadn't noticed before.  And if I remember correctly, the moment I finished Mass Effect I was dying to play the sequel - you're lucky in that you have both available right now (with 3 on the way).

For the record, I also played Dragon Age: Origins and disliked the combat system.  It was bearable, since I completed the game and its DLC but it did have its moments of rage.

The combat system in Mass Effect 2 is so very, very good.  It just works, and is so much better than the system used in Mass Effect.  I just wish I could erase my memories of the games so that I can start playing them again without knowing anything...

So, I've finally ultimately decided to buy Mass Effect; just ordered it from Amazon. I'll likely get the second one after that too; I'd buy both together, but I've decided to just be careful here. While I think there's a good chance I'll like both of the ME games, I still remember plunking down 50 bucks for the Ultimate Edition of Dragon Age Origins, and not liking it all that much. (Again, the freaking combat system...) I think I'll like this one though.

From what I gather from Twitter trending topics, both Mass Effects are on sale right now.

Hell, the second is eight bucks (download):

Thanks; I've now bought the second one as well. I ordered a physical copy though. I don't do digital downloads. The sale for the physical version wasn't as good as the sale for the digital one, but it was still a sale. ;)

By the way, since we're talking about games made by Bioware, I have some more of their games that I bought a while back, but either long abandoned or didn't finish; Knights of the Old Republic, and Jade Empire. What's the general opinion of these titles?

(I also have Baldur's Gate II; everyone keeps saying 'OMZ!!! YOU HAS TO PLAYZ THIS GAME!1!" but I just can't really get into it, no matter how many times I've tried. The battle system has similar problems to DA:O, but additionaly, the game just seems inaccessible and off-putting, even possibly overwhelming. It doesn't help that you start off being forced to do nothing but sidequests; of course, this wouldn't be as much of a problem if the combat engine was good. If so, then you could just have that to entertain you while you're doing the sidequests, and just focus on them, but that isn't the case. I don't know; maybe I'm missing something? And it's kind of weird, as I was able to finish Plancescape Torment just fine, despite the similar engine, and also having a lackluster combat system.)

Take it you're not familiar with the developer's reputation?

Out of curiosity, which DLC is the best for ME2?  Is there ever a point in time in the story where you can no longer play the DLC without starting a new save?  Started playing it again and having a blast.  I figure I'll finish all the loyalty missions and a DLC or two before i head onto the actual storyline again.

You can play the dlc missions at any time. The best is lair of the shadow broker imo.

You can even play the DLC after beating the game.

I second Lair of the Shadow Broker, but I also enjoyed Overlord. Kasumi is an interesting character but I felt like her DLC could have been longer.

Arrival is another all-too-short one. The gameplay is good though - I liked having Shepard go in alone.

The Kasumi and Zaeed DLC is best done in the first part of the story(before Horizon),followed by Overlord(boring one in my opinion),and when you complete the game go for Lair of the shadow broker and end it with The Arrival.

Lair of the shadow broker is the hardest DLC of all(make sure you have your party maxed out) but the payoff in my opinion is the best out of all DLC.End the story formally with the Arrival and simply wait for Mass Effect 3.

Yeah, the arrival should be played last, after completing the game. It's like a prologue to ME3, a last desperate attempt at delaying the arrival of the reapers.

Interesting.  Thanks for the answers.  I think I got the Zaeed one for free since I bought the LE edition of the game so that's pretty nice.  I'll at least have to try the lair of the shadow broker and perhaps put off The Arrival till later when we get closer to ME3 coming out in 2012 to keep my memory fresh.

No, a combination of missing reviews and a huge backlog of rpg's to play would be more precise. Hey, though there's some great reviews here geared at rpg gamers and I'm not one to be told what to do or follow "reputations", for instance, I didn't like dragon age on the ps3 :)
