Still on the fence about picking this up, I think Ill buy it if I ever manage soldier through FFXIII, but that would probably mean restarting the whole game since I was about 20 or so hours in and its been a long, long time since I last played it.

If you just care about the story just get FFXIII-2, go to the Beginners' Primers in the main menu, watch a recap of FFXIII and then start a new game in FFXIII-2.

You only are going to lose the chapters of the novels but those are really not that important since is supplemental material for the fans.

Episode Zero was Japan-only and introduced each character and their motivation.  Really, it's must-read material because it actually expands on their characters greatly.

Episode i was actually officially localized and offered as a pre-order bonus from Best Buy.  It's a short little hardcover book that elaborated on the events between FFXIII and XIII-2.

Both can be found fan-translated online. Google "Dilly Dally Shilly Shally."
