I can't imagine telling somebody new to manga to start with Negima...

He asked for must-reads, not baby's first manga =P

---

Mahou Sensei Negima
The beginning is pretty rough, but Ken Akamatsu really grew while working on this manga and at the midway point, it takes on an incredible turn that while keep you hooked until the end.

Mx0
The best manga ever made to be cut short and forced to have a lame ending. There's 2 version of it: the 1 chapter pitch and the actual publication (read both)

Shigurui
Not for everyone, but still an incredible manga. It's about samurai, honor and rivalry. This is akin to seeing someone fall into the tiger pen at the zoo and get mauled. It's terrible but for some reason, you can't look away.

Everything so far either has a shit beginning or a shit ending. :P

One of my all-time favorite mangas is Hoshi no Samidare, which has a solid beginning and an awesome ending.

Mahou Sensei Negima - I will try, hopefully I won't be too turned off.

Mx0 - The idea that I'm working towards someone fulfilling makes me not want to bother or get invested.

Shigurui - That search brought up some...strange images.

Hoshi no Samidare - I like the look of that.

Hoshi no Samidare is awesome and probably ties with Angel Densetsu as my all time favourite manga.

MxO was also really good but kind of ended abruptly.

Edit: My recommendations would be

Hoshi No Samidare
Angel Densetsu (The art is kind of eww but gets better)
20th Century Boys
Cromartie High School
Beelzebub
Yotsuba!

well in Amaterasu  defense he never really wanted to do another harem manga after Love Hina to begin with but that is what the higher ups wanted. He gave them a big fu  by slowly turning the manga shounen.

I realise what I said aout Mx0 made no sense. Apologies, i'm dying of back pain. I meant to say "The idea that I'm working towards an unfufilling ending makes me not want to bother".

@Darilon I've heard of 20th Century Boys, it seems interesting.

I feel like ALL I ever hear about ANY series these days is it has a shit ending.

I'd also recommend Love Hina over Negima, but hearing it gets good half way through (once again, and despite a shit ending Negi has) may encourage me to pick it up again.

And he's got the sort-of sequel to Negi: UQ Holder.

Thanks for letting me now how you guys watch, btw

Edit: God damn site sending my message while I was typing.

I just finished up season 2 of The World God only Knows and I was a few episodes further into the season than I had though when I last posted. Oh well time to check dates to try and get a rough idea of when season 3 will get a home media release. Lalala....wait according to wikipedia the first episode of season 3 seems to be part of the Goddesses arc, well I guess that is fine it isn't like there were any imp....wait a sec. THEY SKIP TENRI'S ARC!?! WTF? Dammit this is supposed to be my substitution for the manga since that won't ever get an official release and they skip over one of the best arcs that is also criticially important to the plot? WHHHHHHYYYYY? Oh well there is an OVA of it. Hopefully that will get included in the DVDs or something. I mean flag 0 was on the season 1 DVD so it isn't impossible? Right? Right?!?

Do you guys subscribe to a channel or something?  Or crunchyroll?  I feel like it's a pain to track latest releases or old releases the way you all seem to.
I just get BluRays of stuff I like.....I don't keep up with new stuff too well. I used to listen to some anime reviewers on That Guy With the Glasses, but they tend to not last too long.

How does one Manga.

Is there any must-reads?

Ah my freind, this all depends on what you are looking for. Also whether you are looking for stuff with official translations or not. >.>
I'm going to list off my favorites that are currently running and then follow up with some good ones that have completed.

Currently Running:
One Piece- The manga with the highest sales total. With sales totals like this, you know it has to be good. To get into some finer points, it is a well done battle manga with a varied cast of characters, where everyone actually contibutes to the storyline, humor, drama, and battles. There are no Yamchas here. The world is giant, the battles are epic, and it somehow keeps managing to get better and better. Just be warned it is long at this point (but totally worth, hell I've read it all the way through 4-5 times now).

World Trigger- This is a new series. It isn't too far along now, but it is starting to show some serious promise. I reccomend this one a. because I like it and b. to give you one option that doesn't require a serious time commitment. The battles are strategic, the characters are interesting, and the world has recently been revealed to be massive. I'm hopeful this series will last a long time.

Magi- Really I sort of notice a pattern with my manga preferences when I get to this point as once again it is a battle manga with good characters, good battles, and a massive world. This one has a bit of an Arabian Nights twist to it at first, but eventually spreads out to include Rome and ancient China also. probably a few more places to come in the future as well.

The World God Only Knows- Finally a non-battle manga reccomendation. This one....is considerably more niche. Story is about an otaku who has to use his mastery of dating sims to get real life girls to fall in love with him to save them from demons that have hidden themselves in their hearts. It sounds so stupid, but excellent writing and a strong awareness of what it is doing has turned this into an excellent read. Note: No official release. *shakes his fist at the sky*

Finished:

Bakuman- This is an entertaining story about two kids who decide to create manga in high school and takes a detailed loook through the process of making a manga. It is well written and an entertaining read. Only weakness is the love plot portion which is sickenly sweet at times, but it is only sparsely sprinkled throughout. Very much worth reading.

20th Century Boys- An amazing read. I really don't know what words to use to describe it beyond a very interesting manga with some good mysteries and some very powerful moments.

Full Metal Alchemist- Excellent series from start to finish. Totally worth reading even if you have seen the first anime. If you have seen Brotherhood, then you got most of the major points (although I think the manga handles things a little better).

Everything so far either has a shit beginning or a shit ending. :P

Fullmetal Alchemist did not have a shit ending. It was well built up and handled quite well. Bakuman's ending was alright.....it just ended on the love plot so the last chapter was a little weak, but that was sort of how it had to end. Really series just get shit endings when they end before the creator intended (or alternatively when they get dragged out beyond their natural life spans *glares at Bleach and Naruto*). At least with manga, no idea with anime.

Side note, Love Hina over Negima? I take it you have not gotten far in Negima have you? Because....they sort of end up in different genres after about three volumes. I suppose alternatively you might just dislike battle manga, but still Love Hina?

Yeah I know, I mentioned it in my post. :p But I have been watching the English dub of the series on Blu Ray. So there is no guarantee at the moment that the arc will be on the season 3 Blu Rays. :( Also it just makes me so confused that they would just suddenly decide to skip so many conquests at once including three goddess conquests.....especially Tenri. Really curious as to what they are going to do with Season 4 (assuming there is one) also since the post-goddess arc is still ongoing in the manga at the moment. *sigh* I just have to pray that the Tenri arc is on the season 3 Blu Ray releases. Otherwise.....I will cry. >.>

So I've been meaning to write this for a while: this season is really good.
I don't think I've ever followed this many show in a single season.

Continued from last season:

Space Brothers
... I think I've talked enough about this show here by now.

Magi 2
More Magi is good Magi. The current arc is about to get action pumped.

Gin no Saji 2
As good as season 1 which was as good as the manga. Very easy to like.

New season:

Saki: Zenkoku-hen
Other than the temporal WTF of the first 3 episodes, I'm enjoying this a lot. Easily the best mahjong anime ever (not that there's much competition)

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren
I'm actually not too sure why I'm watching this. It's not superb but it's clearly not bad. Maybe I just feel compelled because I watched season 1. I feel bad for the guy having a schizophrenic girlfriend... my bad, I meant 8th grader syndrome girlfriend.

New:

Sakura Trick
Yurilicious !!! I've seen porn that was less hot than this show. Very vanilla and cute.

Mikakunin de Shinkoukei
Pretty good show and the plot just thickened majorly with episode 4. The breast physics in the opening may or may not have influenced my global enjoyment of this show.

Z/X: Ignition
Reminds me of the old Digimon shows and I'm all for that.

D-Frag!
While I've never read the manga, I like the anime. It's funny enough to be a comedy show.

Witch Craft Works
Good show and the ending always kills me.

Space☆Dandy
This show is completely stupid. It goes far enough in the absurd to be funny.

Hamatora
Pretty cool setting. Interested in seeing more.

Wizard Barristers
From the guy who made Kite with the same awesome art style of Kite.

Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha
Pretty accurate to the manga. It's a lightweight comedy/romance.

Noragami
Haven't actually watched it yet, but it's on the to-do list. If anything like the manga, it should be good.

I initially LOVED the premise of this show, but I feel that it gets played up waaay too seriously to the point its strange (you do get awesome action out of it, even better since it's got the lovely KyoAni flare to it).

Reading Magi!  And some Shoujo....because I like campy, hammy romances every so often where every second panel has blushing. :S

**** me, I forgot:

Strike the Blood
Vampire action ecchi works for me (in order of importance)

and

Wake Up Girls
A bit sad about how quick things are progressing (they are already on TV at episode 3...)

and

Nourin
Up to now, very funny. Another gag show that I'll watch as long as I think it's funny.

---

That's a grand total of 18 shows. Deeyam

EDIT: GODDAMMIT... I forgot Log Horizon.
19 anime
