Spoony from Spoony Experiment has reviewed FF8, FFX and is now reviewing FFX-2. For those of you who have seen his revews for the FF series, what do you think of them? Basically he's said every Final Fantasy after FF7 has been a total mess (excluding 9, since he refuses to play it because of the art design). Would you agree with his points for why those games are awful? Or do you totally hate his shtick?

[For those of you who've never heard of this guy, here's the link: http://spoonyexperiment.com/game-reviews/]

He can be funny (I love the Wendy's training vids). But his refusal to play FFIX discredits him from having a serious opinion about the series.

I don't get why people put FFVII on such a pedestal.  It was a mess too ;)

The first RPG they loved. My first was undoubtedly Dragon Quest too, yet FFIV was the one that got me hooked into the genre and I loved until a relatively recent replay. Even then it's still a fun game for the most part, just overly simple and melodramatic.

My first RPG was Super Mario RPG (Seven Stars). But it was Chrono Trigger that got me hooked. I imagine that FFVII is what got many people into RPGs and it has that nostalgia/charm (rather than being the BEST EVAR!!!111).

A mess in what way? It only became a mess when they started retconning and rewriting the whole thing with endless sequels, spinoffs, and retellings. On its own, it's fine.

FFX was my first JRPG that I played as a JRPG (I didn't know Kingdom Hearts or Pokemon were). Skies of Arcadia: Legends got me into JRPGs. I do think refusing to play a game based on the art-style is pretty stupid. One of my friends can't play Chrono Trigger or Dragon Quest because she can't stand the artist and it's really annoying.

FFVII is, as others have pointed out, not a mess. The game boasted a lot of firsts, or things which were, and are, still not seen very often. I'll refrain from posting them because I don't think we need to derail another topic debating the merits of FFVII. Sned me a PM if you want.

The artstyle contributes to half the feel of game.

If your favorite game was represented in monochrome with a bunch of stick figures I doubt it'd be your favorite game.

I dislike Spoony. As an Internet personality I just find him grating. I also actually have issue with calling what he does "reviewing" but maybe that's just me. While I find people like the Nostalgia Critic and Yahtzee entertaining, I am not willing to trust their opinion. Afterall, they aren't actually giving you their real opinion. They are characters - larger than life versions of themselves. And since their ego's are blown out of proportion, so are their opinions. While they might not like something, they may not hate it as much as their videos would lead you to believe.

So, to answer the question, I don't think very much of his Final Fantasy videos.

(As a note, I know both Yahtzee and Spoony do written reviews that are not fuelled by the persona they have cultivated, and are generally much better ways to gauge their own personal opinion on a game.)

well if you remove dragon warrior from the equation the next rpg i played was shining force 2 and while there is some nostalgia involved there and i likely fostered a love of srpgs its not my favorite nor do i hold it on a high pedestal. meh maybe im just a black sheep.

Nah, Shining Force 2 was an awesome game. It's not nostalgia.

I +1 this big time, especially given that his reason for refusing FF9 is flimsy at best.
