It's a PSN re-release. Meaning it'll be exactly the same game. They won't screw anything up.

Well, one could argue the original was already "screwed up" since the game was censored to all hell in the west. It's not only the decapitation scene near the end, but other scenes like Ryu accidentally groping Ursula and doing the whole "hotsprings peeking" bit.

That said, my disk still works, but I'm glad the game is getting a re-release for those who haven't played it yet.  It's too bad Sony of America is so picky with PSP games, as North American audiences didn't get the re-release of BoF3. Of course, it's not a huge deal with it being region free, but many people aren't willing (nor do they know how) to go about importing.

I think the PC version was only released in Japan and Europe. I have the PC version myself so I can at least confirm its existence.

Should I be excited? Never played this game or any BoF title for that matter.

It's a pretty good game with a memorable (playable!) antagonist, a pretty advanced battlesystem (swap teammembers mid-battle, use combine attacks to create new moves and increase your damage output!) and neat little sprites. If you're new to Breath of Fire, you might as well start with this one. Or maybe Breath of Fire III, that one is good too. The earlier games feel very dated and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, while a really awesome game, scares off a lot of people with its unique and challenging gameplay.

What am I saying? Everyone should play Dragon Quarter! It's a gritty reboot that actually worked, it dares to be different and does it well, and it's perfect for anyone on a diet of MegaTen, Demon's Souls and Nier (which is like, 95% of the people who post on these forums?)!

Oh, but this thread is about the fourth game isn't? Yeah, that one is good too, in a more traditional kind of way.

Really excited for this one.

I watched a friend play a huge portion of this game years ago and have always wanted to go back and play the whole thing.

I have to concur, if you need someplace to start in BoF the preferred order for which game to play first should be 4, 3, 1, 5, 2. Though, your second game should ALWAYS be 5 unless it was your first. And avoid playing 2 if you can. I was so pissed I never bought it as a kid then played it on that-which-shall-not-be-named and was shocked to find how bad it was. I felt a little bad after my friend got 2 on the Wii after I was telling him how much I liked the series and then he was let down by it. At least he was able to bunker down and make it all the way to the end (granted, it was by abusing some really broken skills he happened upon), something I was never able to do.
