Good point - Bioshock 2's multiplayer was a completely unnecessary idea.  (Although I didn't play it, so I don't know how it worked in execution.)

The concept that the multiplayer serve as a prequel to the first game is a nice touch, but the execution is not very good when everything is put in action.

The combats in multiplayer are awkward and it doesn't feel at all like BioShock.

I want to compare mainstream critics to dummies we fart at.  Mainstream is too vague though.  IGN has earned my ire with their review of Shadows of the Damned.  Is this thread about IGN?

So, a new batch of posts have been deleted.  There are off-topic threads for off-topic posts.  Keep these kinds of posts there.  Thanks.

For "big" sites and blogs, it's a combination of advertising and idiocy (see Joystiq's Nier review or reviews that give games that have a good MP mode and a poor single player mode a higher score than games with a good single player mode and a poor MP mode.)

Enthusiast sites tend to be more honest, because there's no money involved.
I avoid online multiplayer because my brain still works.

There can however be series expectations, or what a game would seem best suited for. I can sorta get it for Vanquish for example, whereas it's dumb for Bioshock or Deus Ex. They might not even BE knocked down (not significantly anyway) and just chided for including a pointless mode, as I'm sure some MP2 and also Dead Space 2 reviews have done.

Who are some reviewers on mainstream sites who's opinions you value? I like kevin van ord on gamespot (anyone notice he's losing a ton of weight? good for him) and Tim Turi/Phil Kolar on gameinformer. Phil Kollar is a jrpg guy.

Granted I haven't seen EVERY review they've done, so please don't pull out some review you disagree with and flame up the joint.

Jeremy Parish on 1Up and Kat Bailey on Gamepro are the only ones I can think of that can review games and write well.

I second this. One of the first sites I visit if I'm looking for a review.
I also quite like 1Up.
