It All Comes Back To Basics!

I have been reading many of these editorials, and although some things said in them are opinion, most every one of them makes some very good points. Yes, we cannot forget about those great RPGs of the past... but we shouldn't ignore the future of RPGs either. I don't know how many of you out there still do, but I for one still play those classic 8-bit NES RPGs, (Dragon Warrior 1, 2, 3, 4, FF1, Crystalis) on my trusty NES system on a fairly regular basis. I also have my Super NES still hooked up to be able to play FF 3 and Chrono Trigger as well. But I also play FF Tactics and Suikoden 1 and 2.

But enough rambling for now, let me get to my point, which is WHO CARES? Who cares what or what doesn't define an RPG? Who cares whether a game such as FF VIII has eye-popping graphics or not? Who cares if some of the RPG games out there have a plot that didn't quite flow together? What is the main reason that drives anyone to play RPGs?(or any game for that matter) Give up? It's to have fun! To be entertained! Why do you pick up your favorite game and pop it into it's respective system to play it? Because you like the game! It is fun to play to you! And on the flipside of this, if you play a game you don't like, you're usually not going to play it again. (Unless, you just want to finish it just so you can say "I beat that game", or something like that... I've done this a few times) Example: I love playing the Dragon Warrior games and Chrono Trigger. Whenever I feel the urge to travel through time or kick some Dragonlord butt, I'll pop in the carts and let the fun begin all over again. But for, let's say... Hydlide, Beyond the Beyond,or Saga Frontier, um... I'll think I will let those games stay in the department store clearance bins or decline to buy them at some guy's garage sale. (Although I did beat Hydlide just to say "I beat it." Shouldn't have though...arrgh.) Mind you, these are my personal opinions about these games, but hey..if you love playing Hydlide, Beyond the Beyond, or Saga Frontier, more power to you! Like they say, "Whatever floats your boat." But really, who likes to play a sucky game? NOBODY!

So it all comes back to the basics of why every gamer plays games: TO HAVE FUN! And if they are not playing a game that they think is fun, they will discard it and find one they do find fun. Dinky graphics? Silly Plot? Way too much FMV? Awkward battle system? It is all trivial. If you have fun playing it,then that's all that matters!
