I Like The New RPGs

I'm costantly hearing from seasoned RPG fans that they long for the "good old days" of RPGs. I can remember those days and I really don't see what all the fuss is about. In the "good old" RPGs were mostly about combat and story often took the back seat. The games were fun, and pretty addictive but they weren't the type of game that would realy make you think. Most were lighthearted romps into worlds with one-demensional characters and weak plots. Sure they were a good way to kill a few hours but they were nothing memorable(with the exception of the Zelda and Final Fantasy series).

Recently though something has happened in RPGs. THey have come alive in a way they never did before. This is largly due to Squares high production values. Recent chapters in the Final Fantasy series have proved that a game can be just as epic and involving as anything Hollywood has to offer. But, still many classic RPG fans complain that RPGs aren't what they used to be. They say they hate the way that Squares are futuristic. Or they say that they are all graphics. Mostly, they give no reason and just say they don't like the "new" RPGs.

I think that this is totally pointless. I Love what has happened to RPG's in the last few years and hopes the trend continues. These gamers are afraid of change and don't want the RPG genre to evolve. Also, while there's no doubt that some recent RPGs(FF8) look incredible, that doesn't mean that they have forgotten about gameplay and story. A game with good graphics simply show that the makers want the highest quality of everything. And while many of these gamers may buy more "oldschool" RPGs like Lunar or Grandia, the Final Fantasy series will still continue to dominate the market and RPGs will continue to evolve.
