Introduction

Square Enix has always made powerful strides in the gaming industry, emerging as one of the most prominent software developers in the last two hardware generations by virtue of their innovative software and compelling artistic vision. At this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, the Tokyo-based developer and publisher made another bold step in their pursuit of expanding their influence by conducting a press event independent of their E3 presence – a tactic usually reserved for the “Big 3” of Sony Computer Entertainment, Microsoft and Nintendo of America. The momentous press conference was merely a prelude to the historic first North American orchestral performance of video game music. The concert, entitled Dear Friends: Music from Final Fantasy, was a compilation of Nobuo Uematsu’s most beloved melodies from over 17 years of Final Fantasy as a tribute to fans around the world for their unwavering support.

Performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the exquisite Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles, Dear Friends was a significant milestone for Square Enix. Under the direction of conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoyat, Dear Friends firmly conveyed that music, regardless of platform, remains an art form and a source of enjoyment for all. For this feature, we will explore the details of the press conference, expound upon the upcoming titles announced, and the niceties of the concert itself. We hope you enjoy these articles and the many more news updates to come as E3 2004 continues.
