Legacy of Ykesha: Hands-on

The new zones seen in Ykesha will be on and around the island of Broken Skull Rock, of which we had the pleasure of exploring as a party of level 60 Froglocks.

Dropped into the avatar of a Froglock Shaman, I found myself amazed at the 3D modeling of these new creatures. These bipedal frogmen are graced with superb character animation and some of the most amusing character emotes ever to grace an MMORPG. Disembarking from a ship off the Gulf of Gunthak, we swam to shore from the massive lighthouse in the harbor. Exploring the innards of the island, we came upon Dulak's Harbor after having encountered creatures of fearsome size and ferocity. Ykesha's new particle effect system for spells as well as increased environment details were on display in grand form as we cut a swath of destruction through giant insects and massive trolls.

The next leg of our journey would take us deep into the Crypt of Nadox where we would fight through an almost endless horde of trolls to reach the boss of the zone, a massive witch-doctor inspired Troll Necromancer. The battle was hard fought and we eventually slew the giant.

Our adventure came to an end as we were brought aboard the massive ship called Hate's Fury, a vessel large enough to be its own zone, and fought against the enormous ghost of the ship's captain. When we slew the apparition, we were treated with a rather dramatic death sequence of the pirate ghost being dragged down by massive ethereal tentacles, leaving naught but his hulking cutlass. The battle against this three-story monstrosity was probably one of the most thrilling encounters I've ever had in an MMORPG in ages.
