Best Strategy RPG of 2012: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2

Best Strategy RPG of 2012: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 (Nintendo DS)
Writeup by Bob Richardson
Though few can claim that Devil Survivor 2 introduces anything substantially new, more of the same isn't always a bad thing. With new heroes thrown into a cataclysmic Japan, players must scour the entire country for a way to — overthrow a God? Adhere to one? The paths once again vary as player choice influences relationships with the cast. Darker in nature than the typical RPG, Devil Survivor 2 encourages players to follow a path that suits them as they introspectively delve into a world potentially near its end. Combine the meaty plot with extraordinary customization and balanced gameplay in this atmospheric title, and you've got a strategy RPG that will withstand the test of time.

Dungeons and Dragons? More like Angels and Intrigue. Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time is a blast from the past in the best way. Retro art and freeform strategic warfare combine for a fantastic RPG experience ripped straight out of the 90s. Even when the going gets tough, Growlanser's politically-charged plot with branching paths provides a compelling impetus to pick the game up again and again.
