Quantic Dream continues to prove that it knows how to put together an interactive narrative. Beyond: Two Souls stands out yet again with both a great story and some stunning performances. It also deals with choice in a clever way, by rarely letting you know that you're actually making a choice. It won't be until discussing it with a friend or replaying it that you'll grasp just how different things can play out. It may have its own set of quirks, but you'll honestly be too wrapped up in its paranormal sci-fi world to notice. Beyond has a lot of stand-out moments that I refuse to spoil, and should truly be experienced by anyone who enjoys a great adventure game.
The exciting continuation of the Ace Attorney series arrived this year after a lengthy hiatus, making it all too clear how much we missed the goofball lawyers of the Wright Anything Agency. Dual Destinies continues the series' tradition of juxtaposing genuinely hilarious dialogue with unexpectedly dramatic murder mysteries to great effect. Rookie lawyer Athena Cykes' Mood Matrix ability is an interesting new way to cross-examine witnesses by untangling their emotions, and it ties into the plot surprisingly well. A streamlined investigation process keeps the game moving at a consistent pace, and everything builds up to an explosive finale that had us shaking our heads in disbelief. If you've never played an Ace Attorney game and are afraid to jump into this one, trust us: it's worth your time.
