Games of the Year 2014

Kyle Miller's Awards
5) Destiny (PS4)
Staggeringly unambitious, yet addictive. The core gameplay is superb. I don't give a fig for Halo, and Bungie has seemingly put blinders on post-release (I'm bitter about the first "expansion"), but the shooting is too damn competent for me to give it up. I recommend playing with a loved one, such as a little sister who may be better than you at the game...

4) Dark Souls II (PS3)
It pales in comparison to the original Dark Souls, but what game doesn't? I solo'ed Dark Souls II, and I did it through sheer stubbornness and force of will. How many other games can build character?

3) The Banner Saga (PC)
Poetry. A somber, grave, melancholy journey that encompasses all that is harrowing about life on the move.

2) Divinity: Original Sin (PC)
Poetry. A somber, grave, melancholy journey that encompasses all that is harrowing about life on the move.

1) Legend of Grimrock II (PC)
Pure magic. The antidote to AAA conformist mediocrity and overproduction. A testament to the potency of a little imagination, ingenuity, and strangeness.

Honorable Mention
Child of Light (PS4)
Where did this game come from? A gorgeous storybook adventure that invigorates the boring old turn-based battle system with a few simple additions. Playing on Expert was grand.

Best Non-RPG
Wolfenstein: The New Order
It's not what you expect. Unpretentious and at once self-aware and self-assured, this new Wolfenstein is absurd on paper, yet convincing in the moment. It gets away with alternate history narrative murder and it has fun doing it. There's something appealing about a game that knows — and is — exactly what it wants to be. A wildly unpredictable shooter with brains and, I daresay, a heart.
