...Why do people insist on sending me Aqua music? Evil, evil music (and people, for that matter) I tell you!

Anyway, Suikoden III has yet to arrive. However, since it's been quite a bit of time, my bets are on tomorrow. Gee, let's hope I wake up early enough on time to play it. Or at least see the intro. (That is, if I get time before I have to run off and do errands.) I have other miscellaneous plans this weekend, but this isn't my online journal.

OR IS IT?!

Speaking of journals, I set up that Fire Emblem community on LiveJournal. Yes, my first contribution to any particular fandom since that crappy Xenogears page, but nonetheless, a fandom. This one's more worth it anyway, since it's kinda to spread knowledge of an otherwise obscure RPG series...

Letters time! The Metroid countdown begins... or rather, continues. It begun at E3, really. :P

Here we go.

WHEN I HEARD ABOUT THE GAME PSO1&2 i ALMOUST WENT INSANE. ITS A ONLINE RPG THAT CAM BE PLAYYED OFFLIONE ON CUBE AND PS2. YAY! THE ONLINE RPG WITHOUT ONLINE FEES. BUT IS A REMAKE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION SYSTEMS. I WANT TO KNOW WETHER OR NOT THE OLD VERSION IS GOOD. AND WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT. TELL ME ALL YOU KNOW.

i LOVE CEL SHADED GAPHICS. THEY ADD DEPTH. AND MAKE THINGS CLEARER i THINK ALL GAMES SHOULD BE CEL SHADED. THERE IS NO ROOM FOR PIXILS. LONG LIVE THE CEL SHADE. BYE THE BYE CUT SCEENES MAY STAY THE SAMES NO USE LOWERING THEM

-LIZARDS COUSIN JOE

[Eventually, he hit the CAPSLOCK key again.]

I am out raged. I am angy I am sorry I started this argument. I am joe I started the argument with Lizard about true rpg's. and she has stooped to low this time. To consider THPS as a RPG is BLASTFAME! She is re entering what I already critisized. I said "if that is your only basis then any game with plot is an rpg." this was critizizem. not to be taken literally. I was saying that is not true. By the By Tony her brother in law, my cousin is a sports game player so it is hard to get a good judgment from him, but THPS a RPG. Now they have GONE TO FAR!

Cel shading: I can only sum up what mr cool aid saaid I am behind him 100%

Yuna: New yuna looks awsome. No more crappy wand she is wieldin two guns. You know what just to hint I think FFX-2 will be popular for the same reason tomb raider was. No guy can shake off the felling to play a game with a chick and guns.

[And finally... Sorry Joe, but I'm not answering these as four separate letters.]

Joe again sorry just saw somthing. The topic.

FIRE EMBLEM: I have only seen them from melee, but I will be the first person to rent it. if i like buy. to sAY THE LEAST rOY AND mARTH ARE TOTALLY AWESOME i HAVE A WHOLE MEMORY CAR FULL OF THERE PICTURES. Exept for two pictures link and zelda. Lizard took them and won't let me delete. they look awesome and I read all there trophies

BY JOE

Wait, PSO doesn't have online fees? I guess that monthly fee covers all those game cases Sega had to package the game in, right? Second of all, it's not coming to the PS2, just the GameCube and XBox. Third, the older versions (Versions 1 and II, for the DC) were great until they got almost literally ruined by cheaters. As well, the new version is a bit more than a remake... it has a lot of extras, including twice as many areas. And personally, I'd rather play online with some friends, but I'm just social like that.

...All games be cel shaded? No thanks. It may work where I've seen it, but I don't think it'll work in every situation.

Eh, I'm sure a 'true RPG' debate isn't exactly... uncommon. In fact, look at all the discussion it's sparked. By the by, I don't quite think that she was actually trying to call THPS an RPG... just making a point, or something. Anyway, methinks you two should settle this out on your own.. aheh... *sweatdrops, and backs away slowly*...

I think FFX-2 might get some of its popularity for the same reasons as TR... but I also believe it'll get other chunks of popularity from *gasp* RPG and FF(X) fans. Yeah, Yuna looks great in some of our eyes, but... how many of those buying the game are NOT in it for the story? I mean, really.

...and you bet your Hot Pockets FE is good. Not that the games will ever come here, so there won't be anything to rent. Sorry... :P We can always dream though, and just... er... stick to SSBM and watch the FE anime, right?

*blinks* Okay, do you and Lizard ever get along? (Yes, this is a serious question.)

Ah...

Concerning a "True RPG" :

Despite their differences, MMORPGs and traditional one-player RPGs share a couple of key traits that define them as "RPGs" - --Some sort of experience system, be it levels, or another system where characters' innate stats or weapons can be improved upon --A magic/special moves system
--Fantasy-type stories and atmosphere.
--Equippable (is that a word?) weapons, accessories, and, well, um, equipment.

I'd classify BOTH types of games "true rpg." It's like saying "well, Halloween is a TRUE horror movie because Michael Myers uses a BUTCHER KNIFE, but Texas Chainsaw Massacre isn't because Leatherface uses a CHAINSAW!" Horse sh*t. They're both horror movies, so why bother trying to subclassify them? Why not just leave it at "Horror Movie?"

This reminds me of a time when my friend ran a very successful (but now defunct) message board (The Grand Cross -- ever heard of it?), and many of its patrons were arguing over which FF was best and why. I always said, "Who gives a crap, I love em all regardless." But, this discussion is interesting nonetheless. I look forward to others' comments.

~The Amazing, Sneezing Floor Tile.....name still under construction.

Nope, never heard of the message board. Sorry. :P

Sounds like something I'd usually be saying. However, running a column in which this discussion even began, I'd rather encourage the discussion, since that's... um, what this section's all about. I find it hard, and silly, to classify anything as a true RPG, since it'd be like saying that RPGs would have to have some definite perimeters to pass as 'true' RPGs, and there's so many things out there that RPGs do and don't have that the line is way too blurry... and God damn it, I'm rambling. Sorry. But I do like hearing others' definitions of such.

I will, however, have to disagree with the fantasy setting... not entirely, but it's not much of a defining factor.

You guys? Hey, I'm only the host here!

Hey,

WTF is going on here? A "true rpg!?" You guys have to be full of it... Seriously, how can you flush this genre into one little, nice package? An RPG is so damned multi-faceted that is or rather, SHOULD BE, impossible to say: "That's a true RPG, or, that's not a true RPG - man, hell no - that's an Action-RPG!" Action-RPG? WTF? That's like classifying a Nissan 350 ZX as a "true car" and then everything else is just a: "Action-Car". Some may argue that: "Cars have engines, cars have wheels - therefore anything with an engine and wheels is a car." WRONG. Might as well be saying: "RPGs have characters, RPGs have a story and a quest" therefore "every game is an rpg."

Seriously man - there is no such thing as a true "RPG." A true RPG in the latter example would hence be almost every game.

A gamebox? And where did Final Fantasy have to cover everything Fantasy? Because it's a trademarked title and you can't think of any other kind of game? Jeez, thar be Suikoden, SOA, Phantasy Star (hey, that's got PHANTASY in it) Star Ocean, 'Tales' Series, Lunar, The Xeno Saga, Grandia, SaGa series... damn man - and the list goes on - don't try and bring your argument into what an RPG in YOUR terms is... Because according (as stated above many a time) any game would be considered an RPG.

Hold me back dawg, 'fore i flip out and slice this mofo's hizead izoff!

Ahem, later-
Monty Python

Hey, what do you think I've been trying to tell these people all along? Still, as I said already, I encouraged the topic to get some discussion going here, and it worked, even by getting letters like this one saying there IS no definition. (Which I agree on, of course, but again...)

(And since it's directed more at various readers than me, I'll shut up now. :P)

Well, if you say so.

You wanted to know what a gamebox is? Well, My brother in law and I don't exactly LIKE The gamecube. So My Brother in law made up this name to make fun of the gamecube. I correct him alot of times but after a while it becomes useless. Did that answer yer question?

-The Lizard

...that's your way of making fun of it? It's just... a small variation of a current name. There's nothing even, er, derogatory in that. Sorry, but even I could do a lot better. Not that I'm going to even try, since I happen to like my GC. :P

Oh, and for the record, just because someone owns a GameCube doesn't mean their opinion is... well, worth less. You may not like the system, but plenty do, RPG fans included.

WTH is a gamebox?

So what is the news on the Enix situation, you know supposing Gamecube gets the dragon warrior exclusive. Also is there going to be any news on Fire Emblem cubed, and the final fantasy cc . I mean what even happened to the Camelot rpg, we Nintendo rpg fans here these rpg stories about tight rpg's comin put for the cube, but Nintendo doesn't even release anything about Camelot rpg and it has almost been 2 years!!! What happened to the Namco rpg, and Tales of Phantasia. Why does ps2 get all these rpg's and cube owners get happy when 1 rpg comes out. I dont get that why dont they just make one good rpg for gamecube, and get more rpg support.

Thanx

Fire Emblem GC? Ha, I only WISH. Though I don't doubt the possibility sometime in the future, when the fandom over Fuuin no Tsurugi (not to mention Roy) wears off, since the FE series isn't exactly hurting.

As for the Camelot RPG, I have no idea. Enix is supposed to announce a new Dragon Quest according to rumors, but who knows what'll happen there. I personally don't care for DQ, so whether or not it ends up on the GC doesn't affect me much. Unless they do some different and neat changes that I end up liking.

So, the GameCube only has one RPG. I guess I either dreamt up Lost Kingdoms, its upcoming sequel, Phantasy Star Online, Zelda, Skies of Arcadia Legend, Evolution Worlds, Harvest Moon, et. al, or all those franchises suddenly turned into action, sports and Bemani style games, but somehow I doubt that. I also doubt that Square and Nintendo working together again would hurt the amount of RPGs for the GC either, with an FF title, no less. Nothing bad happened to the Namco RPG either, there just hasn't been info on it lately. Wait, so you're telling me the GC doesn't have enough RPG support? Do you still think so now? :P

Quickies~

I was home from college a few weeks ago, and my Dad asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I said "Suikoden." He said "What the hell is that?", and I responded "Oh, it's an RPG."

Dad blinks, and says "Rocket Propelled Grenade?"

Just thought I'd share that with the masses.

~Silent Death

Ha ha, that's just classic. Whenever I mention RPG to someone clueless they think I'm into D&D, or something. Hell no, I'm bad at those games... unfortunately.
Hey do you know if they are going to be releasing Kingdom Hearts Final Mix here for sure or not in North America and Final Fantasy X-2 also if you know do you know when?? thanks bye....
Seeing as KH Final Mix is, quite literally, our (US) version of KH, but with an FFX-2 trailer at the end (though other extras aren't really known about at this point), I doubt we'll be getting it here. I mean, did we get FFX International? In our dreams.

Though speaking of FFX2, it's rumored that Square is releasing it (as well as the FF I & II remakes, and Unlimited Saga) here, which isn't exactly the surprise of surprises, but it's still not quite official yet. Out of the three, I'll just say that FFX-2 is the highest possibility. Just stay tuned for the word...

I'm sure you've got this about 50 times by now, but for the fellow that wanted to know about renting games, check out www.redoctane.com. I've never used it, but it's basically Netflix for gamers.
50? Actually, only one other reader gave me the URL, so... um, thanks! Have a cookie. (What kind do you want? I recommend the chocolate covered mint Oreos!) I hope it helps out that poor bloke who wrote in earlier this week...

Closing Thoughts

Whoo! Weekend time again! This weekend, I get to be more social than ever! And probably tired as ever come Sunday, no, Monday (long weekend!) night... nevertheless, expect me here on Monday, if I'm not too terribly dead by then.

~ Liz, your yellow summer, your winterblue. (letters@rpgfan.com)
