Great King Rat December 21, 2004
Ahoy, people. I hope your Christmas shopping has been less stressful than mine has. I've got several gifts that aren't due to arrive until the 23rd and 24th, so I'm getting a bit nervous, as you can probably imagine. :P
Let's get to it, shall we?

Touch me.
Daniel,
Hey I recently purchased the Nintendo DS (and it rocks
by the way). And well frankly I NEED info regarding
the RPGs coming out on the new handheld (perhaps a
list/any info you can spill out). Also, what games you
see in the future, and the DS games you're excited
about. Thanks!

My friend, lists are what I excel at.
As to what games I'm looking forward to...well, none. :P I'm still not sure whether or not I want a DS or not. I don't do as much handheld gaming as I used to, and I'd hate to sink that much money in something I won't use often.
Of course, there is a Harvest Moon game coming out for it, so I'll probably end up with one regardless of what I say. :P
Taking a look at that list, I'd say that the system looks to be a strong platform for some role-playing on the road. I just hope they use the touch functionality to its fullest, something that is apparently lacking in most of the games released so far.

Oh, the evils of marketing.
Hey love the site
Well I'm just wondering why does it seem a game like Baten Kaitos, a good game or a
game like Skies of Arcadia Legends have problems selling. And series like Final
Fantasy, Suikoden, Dragon Warrior, etc don't. Is it because those franchises have
been here so long people just have alliances to those games, and arnt into buying a
whole new game that comes out of nowhere. I don't get it, I don't know if im making
any sense so I'll put it like this, Final Fantasy Crysal Chronicles comes out and
sells around 350,000 copies, now that's pretty good, only problem is the game itself
isnt that good, so then a game like Baten Kaitos comes out and only sells around
50,000 and clearly is better than FFCC, same with Skies of Arcadia Legends. Obviosly
the FINAL FANTASY in the name sold the game, although it wasn't even that good, is
it so hard for people to look past the name brand and look into how good a game
really is. Now im not saying the FF series is bad, neither with the Dragon Warrior,
or anything, I'm just saying why cant any of these other games come out of the blue
and sell well also. Thanks

You answered your own question. :P
The reason sales for Skies of Arcadia and Baten Kaitos don't reach the same heights as Final Fantasy is quite simple: neither of those games are part of an established, easily recognizable franchise. The reason the Final Fantasies and Dragon Quests of the world sell so well is that both series have consistently delivered great games. People feel comfortable in buying them. I mean, they don't make eleven sequels to games that suck, do they? :P
Does that make it right? Not really. It's always a shame to see low-profile games like Valkyrie Profile slide under the collective radar of the gaming world. But that's the way marketing works: slap a familiar label on something and it'll sell like crazy, even if it shouldn't. And no, I'm not naming names. I'm not in the mood for hate mail. It's the holidays, after all. :P

...SnakeFan?
I know this is a RPG website and all, but since you've mention the new Metal Gear a lot, can you tell me if it is any good?
|
|
Why, yes. Yes I can.
MGS3 is easily, EASILY, my favorite game of the year. It's a blast to play, it looks nice, and it doesn't have an insane plot. That last point alone should be enough to make you go get it. :P
...Of course, I have yet to play Metroid Prime 2, so it may not end up being my favorite game of the year. But it'll have to be damn good to top the misadventures of Snake.

Closing Thoughts
Meh, that was a little shorter than I would have liked. You people need to put down your fruitcake and start sending in letters. :P
Keep your eyes open for a new topic sometime soon after Christmas. And on that note, have a Merry Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Pagan Yule Ritual.
