Europe to Get Grandia II in English Only

Knowing Ubi Soft released the first Grandia all over Europe with a lot of different languages (German, French, Italian...), it is no big surprise to learn that Ubi Soft is planning on releasing Grandia II in Europe as well. However, Ubi has no plans for multi-lingual support. Grandia II will be released in English only -- a choice rarely seen for RPGs nowadays (Ubi Soft will provide localized packaging with fully-translated manuals, though). The very large amount of text in the game and more importantly, the quantity of dubbed dialogue is most likely the cause of this decision.

On the U.S. side, Ubi Soft is willing to give Grandia II a high quality English dubbing, with the same team of voice actors used in Metal Gear Solid (see our previous story to recall the details).

If the game is deprived of a younger audience in all European countries except England (due to kids not knowing English where it is not the primary language), will Grandia II succeed in Europe? So far the game has yielded a slightly disappointing sales figure of 100,000 copies sold in the first three days in Japan (the Saturn Grandia sold about 400,000 copies in total). Hopefully the U.S. version will appeal to a larger audience, while the game awaits its first quarter 2001 release in Europe.
