Square Enix has recently opened the official website for its upcoming DS title Hikari no 4 Senshi (Four Warriors of Light): Final Fantasy Gaiden. The game is developed by the development team behind the DS remakes of Final Fantasy III and IV. Development duties are handled by Matrix and overseen by producer Tomoya Asano (FFIII DS, FFIV DS, Fullmetal Alchemist series) and director Takashi Tokita (FFIII DS, FFIV DS, Parasite Eve, Hanjuku Hero). The character designer is Akihiko Yoshida (Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII), with Tomohiro Kamiya (FFIII DS, FFIV DS) serving as sound director.

As we reported last month, the original title will tell a classic fantasy tale of a young man by the name of Brand going on a journey to save the princess from the clutches of the Witch from the North. Brand is a very normal young man living together with his mother in the border country Horn. He has a strong sense of justice and can provide leadership. At the same time, he has an overbearing side to him. Aire is Horn's second princess. She is bright, active and likes to talk. Those traits make her a perfect mood maker, even though she sometimes manages to annoy her fellow adventurers with her egoistic attitudes. Unita is a female rookie knight. She has a stoic and honest personality, but is often too nervous. The cool and collected Jusqua is said to be Brand's rival.

The developers promise a simple, turn-based battle system. The player will simply select the command he or she wants a character to execute on the DS' touch screen.

In Hikari no 4 Senshi, jobs can be changed by making use of the so-called Crown system. Those crowns serve as symbols for the more than 20 jobs (knight, dark knight, white knight, bard, etc.) available in the game. By equipping a symbolic crown, the character will gain access to the respective job's ability set.

Hikari no 4 Senshi: Final Fantasy Gaiden will be released in Japan on October 29th for 5,980 yen ($62.87 USD).
