Square Enix Had An Investors' Meeting
..And talked about Dragon Quest X, the Mana series, and reboots.
06.23.11 - 12:08 AM

Today, Square Enix held its shareholders' meeting in Japan, and were asked varying questions about their franchises, PSN losses - and even whether they planned to open a real casino based on the one in Dragon Quest. (For the record, the answer was no.)

One of the most interesting questions brought up was about Dragon Quest X and the Wii U. Although the Wii U will be backwards compatible with Wii titles, they were asked if the game - already announced as a Wii title - would also have Wii U-specific support. Square Enix's CEO, Yoichi Wada said that that was indeed something the company should consider, and that they were already looking into the Wii U's tech and if they can support the system at launch.

As for the Wii ports of Dragon Quest, DQ II and DQ III, they will just be the Famicom and Super Famicom versions, ported, as it's the 25th anniversary for the flagship series.

One series, however, that won't be rebooted is the Seiken Densetsu (Mana) series. Though Square Enix will keep porting previous installments (Secret of Mana is now on iOS, and Legend of Mana is a PSOne Classic on PSN), no new games are planned.

Wada answered all other kinds of questions about his company: PSN downtime meant losses in the millions of yen for Square Enix. The company is, apparently, always considering and looking into reboots of older IPs, though none were specifically mentioned. He also promised the release of more IP content on social networks, as they've now gotten used to producing content for them.
