Though Star Wars: The Old Republic
drops just in time for Christmas, that franchise may not be everybody's cup of sci-fi tea. Star Trek Online
(not to be confused with Gameforge's Star Trek: Infinite Space
), is a Cryptic Studios-developed MMORPG which is going free-to-play early next year, aimed at exploring both familiar and new races and worlds in the universe of Star Trek
. As with many FTP MMOs, users will have access to lots of content - and it won't be time limited. You also have the option to purchase individual pieces of content through the in-game store, or getting a Gold membership for $14.99 per month, which gives you more access as well.
The game's new opening cutscene can be watched here.
Star Trek Online for PC goes free-to-play as of January 7th, 2012.
