Andrew Barker
Ace Attorney Creator Talks about the Origins of Phoenix and Edgeworth
Including some quite surprising revelations!
06.22.14 - 1:13 AM

In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Shu Takumi, creator of the Ace Attorney series, has revealed a number of interesting facts about the games and the direction they've taken over the years.

When he first began writing, Takumi says he didn't have a grasp on the process of characterisation yet. Instead, "I wrote without thinking too much about it, which means that the things Phoenix says are pretty much what I would say in those situations and his way of thinking is very close to mine." He admits that "You could say Phoenix Wright was Shu Takumi in all but name." But, disappointingly, he doesn't "have a habit of shouting "Objection!" like he [Phoenix] does."

He also mentioned that during the development for Justice For All "it became clear that Edgeworth was an extremely popular character with fans of the game." As a result, Edgeworth took a back-seat as Phoenix's courtroom antagonist. "This made me wonder if, given that Edgeworth was supposed to be such a brilliant prosecutor, it wouldn't [sic] be rather sad to have him lose case after case to Phoenix." Which, ultimately, led to the creation of Franziska von Karma.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy will be coming to 3DS this winter on the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

Also in development is The Great Ace Attorney: a 19th-century courtroom adventure. You can read what we know so far about the title here.
