E3 2015: Super Dungeon Bros Impressions
Castle Crashers meets 3D?
06.18.15 - 3:29 AM

I had some hands-on time with Super Dungeon Bros at E3 this year, and sat down for local co-op with its publisher, Wired Productions. The procedurally generated hack-and-slash game combines a rock music theme with the strange, yet awesome power of bros. The game can be played single or multiplayer and either in the same room or online with friends. Up to 4 people can participate in adventures in the world of Rockheim, though each character plays effectively the same depending on what weapon you picked. I played around with two crossbows and wands, both of which fired projectiles.

When the power of bros combines, you can link together to perform special moves such as the Bronado, where all 4 bros stack on top of each other and whirl around in a fiery fury. Other than that, combat is fairly limited in scope. There are very few special attacks to use and while there are some skills you can upgrade with gold collected they only persist for one dungeon. Once you're done, you start at the beginning in the next. Without a sense of progression, it's likely the game will feel very repetitive very quickly.

Interacting with your bros can also be used to solve simple puzzles, such as having one stand on a switch to raise a bridge and the others defend. You can pick other bros up and throw them too, which allows access to secret areas and across gaps. All loot is shared, as are your team lives, so working together is vital. Moving quickly is important to as a constantly rising threat metre raises the difficulty and density of enemies.

Super Dungeon Bros is due out this winter for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, and Windows 10.
