E3 2015: Cosmic Star Heroine Hands-On Impressions
An update to old-school.

Cosmic Star Heroine is the latest project from Zeboyd Games, the guys behind Breath of Death VII and Cthullu Saves the World. At the Sony booth on the E3 floor, creator Robert Boyd called it a game in the style of Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star, and other classic RPGs with a modern spin. Though I did not get a chance to play the game myself, I saw it in action, and that description seemed spot on.

In Cosmic Star Heroine, you play as a government agent named Alyssa who uncovers a vast conspiracy that threatens all life in the universe. It is up to her to save the universe along with 10 additional characters she meets on the way.

Combat parties can hold a max of four people, and from what I saw, each of them is very different. However, all shared the sci-fi theme that permeates the game. Combat flow is shown on the right side of the screen with a turn bar, and each character displays health, style, and a sort of super meter comprised of three boxes that light up blue. Health is obvious, but style is a novel stat that allows the character to deal more damage and even survive otherwise deadly hits if it is high enough. It goes up as characters act or via abilities. The super meter increases with time and will grant the character extra damage. There is no MP; instead each spell can be cast a set number of times before the character must defend to restore its use.

Characters gain new abilities by leveling up, and can get temporary abilities from their equipment. They unlock new temporary abilities based on their "hackitude" stat, which rises as they level. In addition, Ashley can perform special combos with each of the other team members.

Cosmic Star Heroine should run about 15-20 hours long and will cost about $15. It comes out later this year on PC, PS4, Vita, and later Xbox One. Mac and Linux builds are also in the works.
