E3 2015: Dungeon Travelers 2 Hands-On Impressions
It's exactly what you're expecting. For better or worse.
06.19.15 - 1:42 PM

If you've read anything about Dungeon Travelers 2 before now, then you should already know what to expect from this first-person dungeon-crawling title. The game is broken up into story segments and dungeons and, unfortunately, neither is especially riveting. My time with the demo on the E3 floor began with a basic story segment where we learned a little about Fried (pronounced 'Freed') and his role at the academy. The actual writing was typical of the genre and, sadly, featured little of interest. There were dialogue choices to make, but it was unclear from the short demo whether these ever result on significantly different outcomes.

Dungeon-crawling was an equally limited affair. The D-Pad is used to navigate dungeons, and the cave I explored was bland and featured little worth seeing. Fried does not fight, instead the party is made up of a number of young women who have various melee and magic skills. Character portraits in and out of battle are appealing, but not as impressive as other 2D art often seen in RPGs out of Japan. In the brief demo I played I saw a couple of CGs, both quite impressive in their design. Fortunately/unfortunately, I was already looking up a girl's skirt and at her panties within minutes of playing — an experience likely to either interest or anger different players.

From what I played, Dungeon Travelers 2 is not the best the genre has to offer. Instead, keep a lookout for our hands-on preview of Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold. Dungeon Travelers 2 will be available on PS Vita in summer this year.
