Surprise! In the wake of all the Final Fantasy XV news we've been getting, Square has announced that there will be a new Active Time Report on April 21st. It's nice to know that we'll still be getting periodic updates on the title, although according to director Hajime Tabata this Report will be recapping the recent Uncovered event as well as discussing some other things.

There are some other tidbits of information we can touch on now, though. According to Tabata, the biggest challenge his team faced was the decision to make Final Fantasy XV an open world game. It was a big technical challenge, but they wanted to prove that an HD Final Fantasy could pull off an open world design after the mostly linear Final Fantasy XIII. Tabata believes that Episode Duscae helped to showcase this. Titles like Shadow of the Colossus and Ocarina of Time were also cited as inspiration for Final Fantasy XV's open world.

Tabata is also "quite positive" on the idea of developing the game for PC. "I have in mind a version of Final Fantasy XV that is more technically developed. This version could incorporate things that we were forced to abandon because of the limitations of home consoles. With the PC, this would be an opportunity to release a version far superior in terms of quality and tech. That said, if we choose to develop this project, the development will start from scratch by doing research of what would be the best technology to use. It might not be a simple port of the console version."

Tabata also teased that the team would reveal their plans for downloadable content later this summer, as well as clarifying that it would "extend the gaming experience and ensure that players continue to play." One thing that is almost certain to keep me playing, at least, is the fully-controllable flying Regalia, the car that Noctis and company travel in and which also serves as Final Fantasy XV's equivalent of an airship. "The player will obtain the flying Regalia near the end of the game as an additional challenge. When certain conditions are met, the car is remodeled to the flying model." There's a lot to look forward to in Final Fantasy XV, it would seem, so be sure to stay tuned with RPGFan until the game comes out September 30th.

...man, it still feels really good to say that.
