Peter Triezenberg
Chrono Trigger Director Would "Love" to See A Remake
Could justice be done to this legendary game?
06.05.16 - 8:20 PM

Speak to RPG fans about their favorite games, and the name Chrono Trigger will oft be whispered back in hushed tones. It's one of the most highly regarded RPGs of all time, and in a recent interview with the game's director (and current producer and senior manager at Square Enix) Takashi Tokita, the desire for a"high-quality, high-end" revival of Squaresoft's seminal classic was discussed.

In the interview, Tokita talked about how the rivalry between Squaresoft and Enix, and their eventual collaboration on Chrono Trigger, might play a big part in why the game is remembered so fondly. "It's probably considered sacred since the companies merged. It was essentially a dream mix between Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest; creating or exceeding what it was in its original form is a very difficult feat." Once Squaresoft had finished work on Final Fantasy VI, hundreds of staff migrated over to Chrono Trigger, and Tokita talked a little bit about the game's development process as well. "It was kind of like a grand festival it was really fun. Nomura was actually creating the environment background pieces in Chrono Trigger like the courthouse scene, that was created by him. But everyone probably enjoyed how we were able to do things we'd never done with Chrono Trigger. That was the most exciting part." The most interesting part of the interview, however, was where Tokita mentioned his own interest in a possible revival of Chrono Trigger. "Personally, if there is ever an opportunity, I would love to see a high-quality, high-end version... or a movie production, or something of the sort."

What do you think? Would a Chrono Trigger remake be worthwhile? Personally speaking, I think the DS version is possibly the best version of the game, but I wouldn't say no to an upscaled port of that for modern consoles (or the GBA version of Final Fantasy VI while we're at it. Let us know what you think on the forums.
