E3 2016: Befriend Bony Spirits & Fleshy Souls in Yo-kai Watch 2I mean, who doesn't need more fleshy souls in their life? Oh and there's new media too.06.20.16 - 10:36 PM
There's obvious comparisons to be made between Nintendo's own Pokémon
titles and LEVEL-5's Yo-kai Watch
, with hundreds of monsters to collect and do battle with. But one area Yo-kai Watch
differs is by eschewing simple color-based versions, and instead titling the pair of sequels as Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits
& Yo-kai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls
. Many a conversation was had with the RPGFan staff at how a spirit could be bony or a soul fleshy. None of those conversations ended in a good place, so I'll just leave them to your imagination.
In the sequels, you and your Yo-kai will travel back in time 60 years to bear witness to the origin of the Yo-kai Watch itself. You'll also be able to visit local towns besides Springdale, such as the countryside village Harrisville, and the seaside town of San Fantastico, which just sounds like a great place. Once again, you'll be using your Yo-kai team to set problematic Yo-kai straight and solve townspeople's problems, and even attempt to end a brewing civil war between different factions of Yo-kai.
There's a multitude of multiplayer options in Yo-kai Watch 2, as you'll be able to challenge your friends' Yo-kai teams in battle via both the internet and local wireless competition. There's also a new 4-player local multiplayer mode described as "action-based," though we're light on details beyond that.
By carrying over save data from the first game, you'll be able to befriend one of three unique Yo-kai: Buchinyan, Noko, or Komasan.
As you likely surmised, the Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls versions, like Pokémon, each feature certain Yo-kai that can only be attained in one version or the other. All told, there are over 350 unique Yo-kai in Yo-kai Watch 2, so get collecting!
Going beyond the game itself, Nintendo and Hasbro are teaming up for some real-world connections: By collecting real-world "Yo-Motion Medals," and Hasbro's Yo-kai Watch Model Zero to scan the backs of these medals, you can earn in-game items, and even new Yo-kai. Both the Yo-kai Watch Model Zero and Yo-Motion Medals will be able in late 2016.
For one last bit of marketing push, Nintendo also announced that Disney XD will be airing the second season of the Yo-kai Watch TV show later this summer.
Now then, with all that info out of the way, let's get to some media. We have a new gallery full of screen shots and artwork for Yo-kai Watch 2, along with both a trailer and lengthy gameplay video straight from Nintendo:
Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits and Yo-kai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls are coming to 3DS on September 30, 2016.
