Happy new year!
01.07.19 - 9:43 PM
Greetings and salutations! The new year has begun, and that means new video games are on their way. While the final days of 2018 didn't see many RPG releases, 2019 is off to an auspicious start with a pair of excellent-looking remakes/ports coming out and an evocative and informative indie title. Let's get started.
Bury me, my Love - Switch, PC (January 10th)
A timely narrative game based on real events, Bury me, my Love is the story of Nour and her husband Majd, with Nour undertaking a dangerous journey from Syria to Europe while Majd stays for the benefit of other family members. The game features complex text message interactions between the two and several possible outcomes. Bury me, my Love draws inspiration from recent journalistic works and from its titular Syrian farewell phrase; it will surely leave a deep emotional impact after playing.
Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition - PS4, Switch, XB1, PC (January 11th)
At long last, the definitive edition of Tales of Vesperia is making its way to the West. Originally released for the Xbox 360 way back in the day, Vesperia is in the upper echelon of Tales games and went on to receive a PS3 port with a boatload of additional content. Unfortunately, that version went unlocalized for many years... until now! Anyway, putting the history lesson aside, this is a really exciting re-release for Tales fans, and something I'm personally keeping an eye on.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey - 3DS (January 11th)
Also coming out this week is the 3DS remake of the third Mario & Luigi title. Bowser's Inside Story is widely regarded as one of the best Mario RPGs ever made, and this 3DS update is more than a fancy coat of paint; it also adds a brand new mode starring Bowser Jr., showing what the little tyke was up to during the main game. Until the series makes the leap to Switch, this ought to be a sufficient appetizer for ravenous Mario & Luigi fans.
