Back to the Future: The Game: Episode 5

"...there has never been a better time to return to Hill Valley and have a blast with some of the most beloved characters of all time, in any medium."

SPOILER ALERT: Given that we're five episodes in, this review will naturally contain some spoilers.

Telltale Games' Back to the Future series has finally wrapped up with episode 5: OUTATIME; and fortunately for fans, it delivers on all the promise of the previous episodes. This episode, while not as dark as the preview at the end of its predecessor hinted at, is still full of interesting dialogue, locations, and puzzles. Additionally, it delivers on the plot as a whole, offering a very satisfying resolution for all the major plot threads and characters. Fans of the classic films can rest easy–with the full season of BttF: The Game, they finally have the sequel they've been clamoring for, and it's a great one.

As expected, the graphics, music, gameplay, and interface remain basically unchanged from previous episodes, so diving right in won't be a problem. This finale is all about wrapping up the story–and it does a great job of it. The activities that you'll engage in and places that you'll go as Marty have a suitable sense of finality and an 'end-of-the-road' feeling to them. That isn't to say that there's no humor to be found, though, as there are a number of great jokes and a staggering number of subtle and not-so-subtle references to the classic films.

Of particular note is the great climax and emotionally satisfying ending. It wraps everything up on a sweet note, and then manages to jam in an absolutely awesome throwback to the original film AND offer up the possibility of future sequels to the game.

Beyond that, there really isn't much to say. Whether you were waiting for the complete season, or have been on the journey all along, there has never been a better time to return to Hill Valley and have a blast with some of the most beloved characters of all time, in any medium.
