Squaresoft has once again proven that they are much more than an one hit wonder. After some failed attempts at creating new genres, and new titles, another cat comes out of the bag.

Enter Brave Fencer Musashiden- Square's new action/rpg overshadowed by the mediocre Final Fantasy VIII demo. (You got to admit- Final Fantasy VIII adds nothing new to the tasty plate of video games). After plugging in my PSX, I hear a loud girlish voice saying: "Brrrrrrrraaaaaavvvvve Feeeeennncaaarrr Muushasiden". I thought cool, I hope this kid can whoop some @$$, because I'm sure he gets hassled alot because he sounds like a girl. Hey, at least he doesn't sound like MegaMan. Anyway, the game started out slow, but got into some Indiana Jones action, proceeded by some more girlish talking. But, the gameplay was great, incredibly fun and interactive. I found myself playing with him on the clotheslines in the village (hey, if you have fun doing that, then this is a FUN game) For that I give Gameplay a 92 out of 100.

Next is the Graphics, and hooooooooooo boy are they something to behold. I thought I was playing an N64 game that didn't acually have fuzzy bears and birds that make annoying noises! Trust me when I say that Musashi's world looks great, and is so colorful you will think you're finger painting in Mrs. Unger's class again. The only thing I griped about is that it looks Medieval, rather than Feudal. For that I rate the graphics 96 out of 100.

Control for this game is one of the down points. Even with the help of the analog, it was pretty bad. Jumping is hard as he jumps too low. Running is hard because he runs too slow (hey that rhymes !). I found the Dual Shock incredibly useless, because all it shocked on was knocking doors and other bad, useless stuff. Next, the reach of his swords are too short, even though he can project Rikimaru (his japanese sword). I got frustrated because of that, Square's going to buy me 50 boxes of Rogane because I think I look like Mr. Clean from a bit of frustration. Anyway, I give control a 79/100

Storyline and Music I will do together, because they both really bite. Storyline is your basic "Oh jeez, look the Princess is being kidnapped and I better save her". If you can understand Japaneese that is really helpful because there is a bunch of girlish voice acting in this game(hey it is better than "What is this place" or "Where's Barry", if you smell what the Rock is cooking :) Music is very forgettable, and for that reason I can't comment, but only give Storyline a 60 , and music a 70.

On a final note, BFM is a GOOD game. It's just not what I call a game for a "Lunartic" like me, or any other RPGer. If you like Zelda-like games, or Super Mario RPG storyline's then take a shot. I give it a 82 in all. I will just go over there to my Saturn where it's warm, and snuggle up with Lunar 2: EB remix for a while........

The control for Brave Fencer is one of the down point of the game.

The graphics are really good for a Playstation game.
