Chrono Trigger is a fan favorite, there's no doubt about that. However, I had never played the game until recently, since I only got into RPGs a few years ago and never really thought about looking into an old SNES game. I'm sure glad I did!
This wonderful game is a masterpiece in every sense of the word, from the dated but still unbelievably beautiful graphics to the unparalleled soundtrack. There's just something about the game which just grabs you by the neck and doesn't let go. After an hour or so of play, I was absolutely hooked, and was never left feeling bored or dreading the fact that I had another long dungeon coming up.
Perhaps part of what kept pulling back was the brilliant musical score, which I feel remains unmatched to this day. It really is wonderfully composed and I can't imagine any future title having a greater emotional impact with its music.
Visually, I was amazed at how such an ancient game (by today's standards) could have such attractive and beautifully drawn graphics. I can still remember marveling at the majestic night at the entrance to Magus' castle. It just rocked!
One thing which truly raises this game above the rest is the thoughtful character designs. They not only look fantastic, but they're personalities are EXTREMELY likable. Every single one of the characters has their own unique style and they are all very memorable.
As for the dialogue, I feel it couldn't have been better written. Everything they say is interesting and often quite funny; the whole light-heartedness of the speech is very refreshing, to say the least.
Finally, the gameplay is typical Squaresoft style. The battle system is my all-time favorite, including the technique system and the clever way enemies appear from out of the background. If anything, the battles and the gameplay in general make the whole experience a lot of fun.
I have just a few minor gripes. The game is far too short, but I must say the excellent storyline partly makes up for it. I was literally left wishing for more and am now very much anticipating the sequel, Chrono Cross (who isn't?). Overall, brilliant game which sadly ended too soon...
If you haven't already played this classic, I HIGHLY recommend you find some way to spend time with this gem. I guarantee that if you don't expect Dreamcast quality graphics in every game you play, you'll have a great time with Chrono Trigger. Trust me, its quality surpasses even that of more recent giants, such as Final Fantasy VIII and Zelda:Ocarina of Time...
