Ogre Battle. A remake of the popular, yet hard to
find Super Nintendo game. Could a game really be so popular as to remake
it on the Playstation? Yes. This game deserves all the praise it can get.
Although the graphics are not 'up to snuff' with the most current games,
it still suffices.
Gameplay - Ogre Battle is played out on large overland maps with towns,
castles, and other hidden locations hidden throughout the map. The menu
is easy to control, and battles even easier. The basic movement of the
game is simple. Tell your units where you want them to go and they take
a sensible route there. Many people gripe at the fact that you cannot fully
control the actions of the characters in battle; rather give them a general
objective and watch them try to complete it. In fights, you can set your
characters to attack in such manners as: Best, Leader, Strong, and Weak.
The only active part that players play in the combat is the use of Tarot
cards, which can have certain effects on the enemy or you. Overall, gameplay
is very good, and I give it 85%.
Graphics - Lets face it. For a 16 bit conversion, this game still looks
remarkably well. With enhanced spell effects and new graphics, it makes
the game better than it already is. Some people don't like the simplicity
of the graphics and complain about it. However, for a 16 bit to 32 bit
game, the graphics are very good. I give graphics a 75%.
Sound - Sound, for the most part is very good. With excellent music,
and decent sounds, Ogre Battle is every bit as good as any 32 bit game
in this respect. At some times though, the nagging voice of 'Liberation'
can get on ones nerves, and the dinks and farts of combat get old after
a while. The music however makes up for the sound. I give sound an 85%.
Story - Pay attention, you might miss something. At times, the connections
in the story can seem distant, but it all leads to a general issue. The
Zenobian Empire has conquered the entire continent. You must defeat the
empire and reclaim the continent in the name of the common good. With 13
endings, decided on how well you do in the game, I give story a 75%.
Overall - When you throw all these things together and mix, you get
a great game that can be frustrating at times, but is well worth it. Overall:
80%.
