Super Mario RPG

Publisher: Nintendo Developer: Square

Gameplay: 95% Control: 65%
Graphics: 100% Sound/Music: 90%
Story: 50% Overall: 80%

Mario is a character who is so popular that just about everyone knows him. He is an icon in the videogame world and at first he was only a 2d guy that would run from one side of the screen to another. Now he is a totally different thing, because now he is an RPG character. So after all that Mario has accomplished in games, can he conquer the RPG world?

Well, for one thing the story starts out simple but the replay value is there. If you have ever played a Mario game then you know what to expect in terms of story; nothing new except the fact that instead of saving the princess it's now gathering the seven stars so people can get their wishes to come true. You know all that corny stuff.

Graphics=100

Graphically this game was just awesome. I compared it to just about any other RPGs on the SNES and this has to be the best. Mario has never looked better on the SNES and the other characters look just as great. Some of the spells in the game really impressed me but I am not going to lie, there are some spells that just weren't that good visually. Another aspect that added to the 100% rating was the fact that the towns looked really great and how the characters in the town blended perfectly in the town that they were in.

Control=65

This is were I really get mad. If they did such a great job on the graphics, why couldn't they try a little harder and come up with some better controls? At first I really didn't notice these problems, but then I ran into some obstacles in the game, like for example trying to get to this chest but to get there you must jump from one block to another moving block then hit the chest. I am not kidding here when I say it took me nearly 20 minutes just to do that task and I know this was meant to take, like 20 seconds. The sad thing about this is that other Mario games have pretty good control, too bad they couldn't adopt that in this game.

Sound/Music=90

Most people that have played the other Mario games will hear sounds and music that they have heard before. Now that doesn't mean that there is nothing new because there are a lot of new sounds and music in this game. The sound is great from Mario's turtle shell weapon that hits the enemy to the Princess's slap across the enemy's face. The music is not revolutionary but it is average. In other words, the sound is great and the music is good, but you're not going to run outside and buy the music CD for this game.

Storyline=50

Remember what I said in the beginning of the review? Well if you don't let me remind you again. There is nothing spectacular about the storyline. The game starts out with Mario going after the princess but then it ends up with Mario looking for the seven stars that will make peoples' wishes come true. Yes, this is a very corny story but after playing all those other Mario games people should be used to that by now. This shouldn't keep you from playing the game, if you do decide to miss this game then you're missing out on a lot of gameplay.

Gameplay=95

This game will keep you playing, maybe not for 10 hours straight, but once you start you must finish. The battle system adds a lot to the gameplay: unlike other SNES RPGs, in this one you if you press a button exactly when the object hits the enemy it will hurt the enemy a lot more. This lets you get more involved in the battle, which gets you more interested. The missions are fun, too. They are not hassles; instead you're always looking forward to the next mission and that's what really keeps you playing this game.

Overall=80

Super Mario RPG is a game that you will look back to and say, "You know what? That game was fun." This game does not have a great storyline, but it makes up for it with the great battle system and fun missions. The graphics are incredible for the SNES and the sound/music is great too, but I wish I could say the same about the controls. The game is not really long, it might just take about 2 days to finish, but it matters how long you play everyday. So take out your SNES, wipe all the dust off and run to the nearest store and find this game, because you don't want to miss out on such a great game.

The rendered intro and graphics are on par with Rare's Donkey Kong Country.

The battle engine is original, in that you can inflict more damage if you press the button at the right time.
