Hey, I'm Kiyan! I enjoy in-depth conversation trees, long walks on the world map, and level grinding at sunset.
Ok, in all seriousness, RPGs have been a huge part of my life for almost as long as I can remember. I started with Pokemon Silver on my bright-yellow Game Boy Color (which I still have to this day) and never looked back. Hours spent cupping my hands over that dim GBC screen just so I could even see 'em all let alone catch 'em all eventually led to hours of jumping, slashing, and spellcasting my way through the worlds of Kingdom Hearts, which in turn led to hours trying to get un-lost in Final Fantasy X. (It took a run of FFX HD 15 years later for me to realize how sad it was that I got lost in a completely linear game!)
I was hooked. And I realized I wanted — NEEDED — more of these things that I didn't even know at the time were called RPGs. If video games could tell stories as enthralling as the ones books told, then I absolutely needed more.
Cause that's my other lifelong passion: reading and writing. I love a good story, but really I will (and do!) read anything I can get my hands on, including stuff that most people find boring. That's why I decided to study English at university with the goal of becoming a technical writer. I love writing that helps people, so I wanted to write repair guides for hardware/appliances and user documentation for software. (I may or may not have spent hours poring over game manuals in awe as a kid.)
Somewhere along the line though I zigged instead of zagging, and now I'm a freelance content writer/marketer working in the IT, AEC, and higher-education industries. I may not have ended up exactly where I envisioned myself being, but that's ok; helpful writing comes in many shapes and sizes. For example, the reviews and news stories I read on RPGFan after discovering the site in high school helped me learn way more about RPGs than I ever knew before… and simply helped me have fun as well!
That's why I'm both proud and super stoked to be part of the social team here!
