Hello, dear readers, and welcome to the latest installment of Coming This Week with RPGFan! We hope that you’ve been staying safe and healthy during this trying time. Fortunately for all of us RPG fanatics, there’s a massive game coming out about forging virtual friendships while we have to stay indoors and practice social distancing! You know the one. Let’s dive in.
Persona 5 Royal – March 31st (PS4)
The beloved Phantom Thieves return on March 31st. Persona 5 Royal is to the original Persona 5 what Persona 4 Golden was to Persona 4: a definitive edition loaded with extra content, new characters, and quality of life improvements that make an already great game even better (read: NO MORE MORGANA YELLING AT YOU TO SLEEP). You don’t need me to tell you that Persona 5 is a great game, but keep an eye out for a review from us in the near future!
Planet Stronghold 2 – March 31st (Windows, Linux)
From developer Winter Wolves, Planet Stronghold 2 is a visual novel/RPG hybrid. Players can choose a male or female avatar and romance a number of eligible NPCs. You can also choose to play the game as either a fully-fledged RPG or a straight-up visual novel if you’re only there for the story. Player accessibility is always a good vibe!
Operencia: The Stolen Sun – March 31st (Windows, PS4, Switch)
We all love a good first-person dungeon crawler, right? Operencia: The Stolen Sun, from Zen Studios, bills itself as an enhancement of the dungeon crawler with “modern sensibilities.” It’s based on Central European mythology and takes full advantage of the Unreal Engine 4 to deliver some outstanding environments. Definitely one to keep an eye on if you’re a fan of the genre.
Fates of Ort – March 31st (Windows, macOS, Linux)
Fates of Ort is a retro fantasy RPG where the player must save the world from deadly Consumption magic. I have to say, I love how this game looks: the isometric pixel graphics are kind of giving me the nostalgic warm fuzzies! Fates of Ort has strategic combat and a unique magic system where magic costs a character’s life energy, meaning there’s an element of risk and reward to each enemy encounter.
The Aegis Saga – April 2nd (Windows, macOS, Linux)
Now, this one is interesting. The Aegis Saga is an interactive novel written by Charles Parkes. You read that right, an interactive novel: not a visual novel, but a text-based digital book with no graphics or sound effects. As the humans and “turans” clash in a world threatened by sinister Blight, the player will have numerous choices in how they proceed through the narrative. It’s definitely an interesting spin on the concept, so if this sounds interesting to you, check it out on April 2nd!
The Innkeeper – April 3rd (Windows)
There’s always something relaxing about games that explore the mundane: your Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, and so on. The Innkeeper is one such game, where the player runs an inn that acts as a hub between seven different nations. Such a gathering place is key to the peace between them, and it’s up to the player to run their inn, cook food, and serve guests. The game will go into Early Access on April 3rd.
We Went Back – April 3rd (Windows)
Last, but not least, we have another Early Access game. We Went Back (not to be confused with The Way Back, the recently released Ben Affleck basketball movie) is a horror game set on an abandoned lunar station. Pay attention to your surroundings, find clues, and solve puzzles in this time-looping, terrifying experience.
And that’s a wrap, folks! Stay tuned to RPGFan for more coverage of your favorite games, and we’ll catch you next time. Happy gaming!
