Hello, dear readers, and welcome to another installment of Coming This Week with RPGFan. Happy Memorial Day! This week, we’ve got loads of exciting game releases to talk about, so let’s not waste any time. Hopefully there’s something to love for everyone in this impressive collection. Onward!
Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen – May 26th (Vita, PS4)
The Vita lives on! The Utawarerumono games are fascinating hybrids of turn-based strategy games and visual novels, offering a deep and compelling narrative for players to sink their teeth into. Prelude to the Fallen marks the first time that the first game in the series is being released overseas so fans can experience the saga’s beginnings. Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen hits the PS4 and Vita on May 26th.
The Elder Scrolls: Greymoor – May 26th (Windows, macOS)
Want some vampires in your Elder Scrolls? Sounds like that’s what Elder Scrolls Online players will get with the latest Greymoor addition as they travel across Tamriel to find artifacts and combat the ancient evil rising from Blackreach. This expansion focuses on Western Skyrim, which should be quite interesting in context. There’s a neat insider look at Greymoor on the Elder Scrolls Online page to view before the PC release on Tuesday, too. Console gamers will have to wait slightly longer for the console release on June 9th.
Minecraft Dungeons – May 26th (Switch, Windows, XB1, PS4)
Minecraft Dungeons might be the most anachronistic Minecraft-related thing since that one Telltale game. It’s Minecraft… but Diablo! Well, I’ve certainly heard weirder pitches? Honestly, this looks really fun, and Minecraft‘s blocky aesthetic lends itself well to this genre of game. If Minecraft Dungeons looks like your bag, then you can pick it up on your platform of choice this Tuesday!
Phantasy Star Online 2 – May 27th (Windows)
ARKs, rise up! After releasing on the Xbox One earlier this year, the long-awaited Phantasy Star Online 2 is arriving on Windows PCs on the 27th. For those who don’t know, PSO2 is an MMORPG with real-time combat that’s based on the legendary Phantasy Star franchise. Here’s our impressions of the closed beta for an early look at this one. Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling – May 28th (Switch, PS4, XB1)
In the absence of a (good) Paper Mario game in recent years, why not take a walk on the wild side with Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling? This game is a charming RPG from DANGEN and Moonsprout Games, where players assume the role of a group of insect heroes and engage in turn-based combat with contextual action commands. It certainly looks like the sort of thing fans of Paper Mario have been missing in recent years, so definitely give this one a look if it sounds appealing! And keep an eye out for a review from us soon.
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition – May 29th (Switch)
Remember when we had to practically beg Nintendo to release Xenoblade Chronicles in the West? Pepperidge Farm remembers. In any case, Xenoblade Chronicles was arguably one of the most influential JRPGs of the modern era, a zeitgeist that blended a semi-open world and MMORPG-inspired combat mechanics with the kind of epic saga that only a Monolith Soft game could deliver. Now, the game is finally escaping the standard definition clutches of the Wii and 3DS and taking its rightful place on the Nintendo Switch. With a high-definition graphical overhaul and a new playable epilogue, now is the perfect time to journey with Shulk and his cohorts.
XCOM 2 Collection – May 29th (Switch)
Ready to dive in to some turn-based strategy action? The XCOM 2 collection on Switch has you covered. This excellent compilation of the 2016 hit includes the base game, its expansion pack (which you can read RPGFan alumnus Robert Steinman’s review of), and four DLC packs. That’s a lot of value to be had, for sure!
Borderlands Trio of Packages – May 29th (Switch)
Okay, so, uh, there’s a lot of Borderlands content coming to the Switch! Players can pick up Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition on its own, but on the same day, the Borderlands: Legendary Collection and The Handsome Collection also come out. The former comes with the GOTY Edition, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, while the latter comes with just Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel. It’s a little confusing, but hey, at least you have several options to get your shoot-and-loot fix, right?
Little Misfortune – May 29th (PS4, Switch, XB1)
Do you want to play a game? Well, if you’ve heard anything about Little Misfortune, I can understand why you might hesitate. But don’t hesitate to enjoy the console release of this unique graphic adventure from the Fran Bow team. And, I mean, who doesn’t want to help a darling little girl help her mom? Of note, there appears to be a GOG sale on the PC version of this game (as of this writing) to celebrate the console release! It’s a good time to get a little…dark.
