Square Enix Announces Anime Adaptation for The World Ends with You

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 13 years since The World Ends with You first charmed JRPG enthusiasts with its intricate narrative and sublime soundtrack. But time doesn’t lie, and a quick internet search confirms my suspicions: Square Enix’s beloved game arrived on the Nintendo DS all the way back in 2007.

For over a decade, fans have watched as The World Ends with You has been ported to iOS and Android, popped up on Nintendo Switch in the form of a remaster called The World Ends with You: Final Remix (which you can find our review of here), and even drummed up some surprising cameos within the Kingdom Hearts franchise.

Stylish as heck and featuring a unique, satisfying combat system, TWEWY has long proven worthy of a sequel. And though there’s still been no word on such a prospective gift to gaming, we now have something altogether unexpected in its stead — an anime adaptation of Neku Sakuraba’s famous adventure.

In true Square Enix fashion, however, the announcement of The World Ends with You: The Animation is essentially an announcement of an announcement. The anime has an official site up and running but there’s currently nothing to be seen save for a tantalizing countdown timer.

And what exactly is it counting down to, you ask? Anime Expo Lite, which will feature our first real look at the project during a live stream on July 3rd at 6PM PDT. There’s no way we won’t have more to say, so keep an eye on the clock and return to RPGFan soon!
