Advance Wars is Back on Track This December with the Newly Announced Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp

Put your hand up if you remember Advance Wars. Or even Famicom Wars! Well this franchise is no longer a distant memory, as in today’s Nintendo Direct, a remake of the first two GBA games, Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, was announced. Finally, that Wargroove praise got noticed by Nintendo and we’re getting one of the best Strategy RPGs back, and on the Switch no less. These surprise reveals are the best thing about E3, and I’m so glad Nintendo pulled this long-dormant series back into the limelight. It’s been 13 years since the last game, after all!

If you were too busy screaming with excitement at the sight of the Orange Star Nation, here’s the trailer again:

Re-Boot Camp combines Advance Wars and its sequel, Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising into one package, with a brand-new look to make it Switch-ready. it still manages to retain that GBA/handheld aesthetic though, with cute little soldiers on the battlefield and brightly-coloured units. I particularly love the new animated portraits of your commanding unit whenever you enter a combat scene. It’s only something as small as the character’s head moving, or their hair swaying in the wind, but it’s a lovely little touch.

Details are sparse on this rerelease, which has re-built both games from the ground up, but we do at least have a release date: December 3rd. That’s a little bit of a wait, but you can pre-order your copy to make sure you have something to look forward to during the Holiday season.

Does this mean Intelligent Systems will now have two strategy power houses on Nintendo’s consoles again? Perhaps if this re-release does well, we’ll eventually get a Switch Wars too!
