The producers of the Distant Worlds orchestral concerts are bringing them back to celebrate Final Fantasy‘s 35th anniversary! The event is officially titled Final Fantasy 35th Anniversary Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy Coral. Nobuo Uematsu will return to curate the music, and Grammy-winning conductor Arnie Roth will lead over a hundred performers to emotionally destroy fans against a backdrop of HD video clips from the series courtesy of Square Enix. You’d best keep your eyes posted for when tickets go up because these sell out quick. I wasn’t able to see Distant Worlds the last few times they visited Bangkok and Hong Kong, which are (relatively) close to where I live. Maybe if the stars align, I’ll be able to travel this year *smiles weakly, holding back tears*. By the way, if you’re wondering about the significance of “Coral”, Twitter user and Final Fantasy enthusiast Audrey (@aitaikimochi) offered an explanation that I managed to confirm with a quick search.

So, no, it’s not a reference to the beach vibes of Final Fantasy X. I… can’t be the only one desperate enough to think that, right? [Editor’s Note: Hey, until I read this, it was as good a theory as any I had.]

In any case, the Distant Worlds website has more info for you. The existing concert albums are available on Spotify, Apple Music, and (perhaps surprisingly) Bandcamp for your listening pleasure. They’re not currently on YouTube yet (officially), but there’s plenty of decent footage of the concerts to be found if you look. Here’s a performance of To Zanarkand as an example.

RPGFan also just so happens to have reviewed a few of the Distant Worlds recordings, namely the first, second, and third entries in the series. Do check them out if you’d like to know more, and make sure to keep coming back for more Final Fantasy 35th Anniversary news.
