Chinese Action RPG Sword and Fairy: Together Forever Aims for Summer 2022 Western Launch on PS5, PS4

A cutscene still from Sword and Fairy: Together Forever

Eastasiasoft has announced that “Chinese mythology–based action RPG” Sword and Fairy: Together Forever—aka Sword and Fairy 7—will launch in North America, Europe, and Australia on PlayStation 4 and 5 this summer, aiming for a “simultaneous global launch.” Check out the trailer and some screens below, then read on for more details.

The Sword and Fairy games have been around since 1995, which is coming up on 30 years ago now, and you can actually pick up the first six games on Steam via “the Classic” and “Legendary” bundles (or through buying them individually). Only the sixth entry supports English though, so that may be a barrier to entry for those who can’t read Chinese. If you’re wondering whether you need to be familiar with Sword and Fairy‘s long history, Eastasiasoft promises that Together Forever “is a standalone RPG epic that can be enjoyed equally by long-time fans or newcomers without prior knowledge of the series.”

Sword and Fairy: Together Forever is built on Unreal Engine 4, and the ray-tracing support sure helps it to look premium. Digital Foundry put out a technical analysis video for the original PC release that goes into the nitty-gritty details if you’re looking for that. I’m sure the visuals will be a major draw for many potential players, so I hope the port job is done well.

Sword and Fairy: Together Forever Synopsis and Feature List

Together Forever seems to be a fully featured RPG experience, and I’m interested to learn how Chinese mythology figures into the story. Also, “card battle mini-games”? Me likey.

Enter a realm that blends ancient mythology with traditional oriental aesthetics in Sword and Fairy: Together Forever, the latest standalone entry in the nearly 27-year-old RPG franchise! Weaving its tale between the three clans of Human, Deity and Demon, Sword and Fairy: Together Forever puts you in command of a memorable party of characters, each with unique personalities, motives, skills, strengths and weaknesses. Only together can they shape the future! Guide them as one in this compelling standalone chapter that serves as a jumping-on point for those new to Sword and Fairy while paying tribute to the series’ grand legacy.

Sword and Fairy: Together Forever not only features the most advanced graphics in series history, but it also introduces dynamic real-time combat mechanics with total freedom of movement and fluid, screen-filling skill animations. Switch between playable characters and strategize on the fly! Along the way, you can also meet and care for spirit creatures that will aid in your journey. Discover lush interconnected environments, equip your party with new skills, play mini-games and much more as you explore this beautifully crafted action role-playing epic, including exclusive outfits and weapon skins to further enhance the experience!

Key Features:

• Fight in real-time and switch between party characters instantly!
• Explore diverse landscapes, towns and more across a vivid mythology-based world.
• Learn and equip new skills as you progress.
• Experience more than 30 hours of story content and optional side quests!
• Capture, tame and feed spirit creatures that aid you in different ways.
• Play card battle mini-games in between intense battles!

It’s still fairly rare that we get high-profile RPGs like this from Chinese devs in English, and I hope Sword and Fairy: Together Forever signals a sea change in that respect. We’ll let you know when we get a firm release date for PlayStation consoles, but you can actually pick the game up now on Steam.
