Hiroshi Takai, Kazutoyo Maehiro, and Naoki Yoshida (aka Yoshi-P) recently sat down with Famitsu to talk about Final Fantasy XVI and we got some juicy tidbits out of it. The interview is in Japanese, but Twitter user Audrey (@aitaikimochi) came in clutch by translating a few snippets.

The main thing to note is that the game is “95% done” and that the team is in the debugging phase. Yoshi-P, the producer, said there’s a chance the release date could drop around the time of the next news update, which is before 2022 ends. He added that Final Fantasy XVI would not see another delay past “Summer 2023.” Fingers crossed, y’all!

Maehiro, the game’s creative director, talked a bit about some lore regarding the Dominants, people capable of summoning entities like Ifrit. The main protagonist Clive is one of them.

• When a Dominant dies, they turn to stone
• Successors could be born either immediately or take hundreds of years to show
• Some points in history exist where some dominants lay dormant.
• Currently, all dominants exist.

[…]

• No two people can exist at the same time for a single dominant.
• There is no such rule as one dominant must govern over its own country. For example, Waloed has two dominants that live there: Garuda and Odin.

On the six countries that make up Final Fantasy XVI‘s world, Maehiro said you don’t visit all of them and that some are more “symbolic” in purpose.

[…] Yoshida, Director Takai, & Creative Director Maehiro mention even though there are 6 countries in the game, you don’t actually go to all of them. The story will take you to certain destinations, but others may serve more of a symbolic purpose.

Lastly, regarding some story elements, the developers said the narrator is a character in the game and that we’d be “surprised” to meet them. Final Fantasy XVI will also have a “history index” that contains more information on the world.

Two weeks ago, we got a lengthy new trailer that showcased a little bit of everything. Definitely check It out if you haven’t already seen it. Make sure to visit our game hub for more coverage and screens, and stay tuned to RPGFan for that release date!
