PlayStation and Guerrilla Games have revealed that Horizon Forbidden West is getting an expansion known simply as Burning Shores on April 19th, 2023. The new content was announced as part of The Game Awards 2022. It will have players exploring the post-apocalyptic wastelands of Los Angeles, where volcanic climes and gargantuan new machines pose a significant danger to protagonist Aloy. Check out its announcement trailer below!

Burning Shores will be released exclusively for PlayStation 5, with Guerrilla Games citing the scope and ambition of the expansion itself as its primary reason to focus on next-gen console development. An official in-depth statement from PlayStation Blog lies below:

“Our creative vision for the Burning Shores is an ambitious expansion which will take Aloy to the ruins of Los Angeles. It’s an overgrown and fractured city that can be fully explored via the water and flying on the back of a Sunwing. A massive machine threat lurks in its shadows – a huge challenge that Aloy must overcome by using all of her skills and abilities. To achieve this grand vision technically and creatively, we’ve made the difficult decision to focus all our efforts on making an incredible experience exclusively for the PlayStation 5 console.”

Burning Shores will explore a new storyline set after the events of Horizon Forbidden West and bring players a promised suite of new adventures, characters, and locations set south of the Tenakth Clan Land regions. Guerrilla Games has promised that further details will be shared later at an unspecified date.

As someone who thoroughly enjoyed Horizon Forbidden West, I’m genuinely curious to see what Burning Shores seems to be bringing as a continuation to the tale of Aloy. It’s saddening that the sun-setting of the previous generation of consoles is now seemingly in full swing, though I imagine the suite of new experiences to come will be no doubt worth it. I only hope that console availability matches it in the future.
