Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is not very far off — the title releases in early August, and Humble Games has shared a bit more about the game, along with showcasing the recent release date trailer. Some of the creators and actors have commented that Stray Gods is unique in what it’s doing, which certainly seems to be the case. As a “musical,” you’d be excused for expecting rhythm-based gameplay, but… actually, let’s watch the trailer first if you haven’t seen it.

As you can see, the game’s story is presented as a musical, and you make dialogue/lyric choices to advance. Those choices dictate how the song will play out and how the narrative will unfold. It’s a cool way to make an interactive musical, to say nothing of the striking art style. No doubt the potential for different outcomes is going to lend itself well to multiple playthroughs as well.

Humble Games and developer Summerfall Studios have this to say about Stray Gods:

Humble Games and Summerfall Studios shared more insight into Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical, which will be launching on August 3, 2023, with a behind-the-scenes look at their recent in-person Myth & Music event at the El Rey Theater. Stray Gods is one part narrative-driven adventure and one part interactive musical, created by former BioWare lead writer David Gaider, scored by award-winning composer Austin Wintory, voice directed by acclaimed actor and director Troy Baker and starring the incredible Laura Bailey along with a full cast of extremely talented voice actors.

I’m embedding the VOD of that event below if, like me, you managed to miss the performance. Given the oodles of talent involved in this game, including Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, Felicia Day, Ashley Johnson, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, and everyone else you can find on the game’s IMDb page, I expect we’ll be in for some great performances.
