Escape the Cursed Bayou in 2024 with Toads of the Bayou + Closed Playtest

This year’s Guerrilla Collective isn’t the first time we’ve seen Toads of the Bayou, but it is the most recent. Seriously though, there is not exactly an abundance of toad-centric strategy RPGs on the market, so developer La Grange Studios is cornering a very specific market here. Before we go on, take a look at the game’s latest trailer:

As you can see in the trailer, Toads of the Bayou explores several genres, including components of strategy RPGs, deckbuilders, base builders, and roguelikes. It’s a large number of genres to blend, but if they pull it off, I can imagine getting just the right mix of cards, structures, and abilities will lend itself well to both strategic and potentially satisfying combat.

If you’re curious why these toads are battling in the bayou, look no further than the game’s story summary:

Baron Samedi, a spirit of the dead, has tricked you and your group of wandering toads who were looking for a place to settle and thrive, by trapping them in the cursed bayou and forcing them to face the evil that inhabits it. Determined to overcome the dreadful Baron Samedi, the toads must band together to defeat his waves of minions and build a settlement within the bayou.

And there you have it! Featuring over 50 cards, three playable toads with unique abilities, thirteen building types, and ten bosses, Toads of the Bayou is shaping up to be a hopping– okay, I can’t do the pun, but the game looks cute. If you like what you see, the developers have opened up their Discord and inviting people for a closed playtest. If you want to take part and help shape the game, head over to their Discord server.

Toads of the Bayou is planned for a 2024 release and is coming to Windows via Steam.
