Xbox Game Studios and developer Playground Games have given players a first look at the long-awaited reboot of the Fable franchise since the nearly three-year-old teaser video. The reveal came in the form of a debut trailer during the Xbox Games Showcase 2023. It showcases hijinks, vegetable enthusiasts, and more—all rendered in-engine. Check it out below!

Fable – Xbox Games Showcase

The Fable reboot seems comfortable in its trademark comedic roots, starring actor and media personality Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd, Travel Man) as a giant seemingly slain by a nameless hero at the trailer’s end. Check out a brief official synopsis on Fable, provided by Microsoft:

What does it mean to be a Hero? Well, in the fairytale land of Albion, that is entirely up to you. With a dark threat looming, and in a world where your reputation precedes you, your choices will change Albion forever.

The reboot was originally announced in 2020 and acts as a next-generation step for the eighteen-year-old franchise. The Fable game series made its debut in 2004 on Xbox and PC. Sequels were later released in 2008 and 2010 for the Xbox 360.

As someone who has played almost everything this franchise has to offer since my youth, this is a welcome return to a fantasy land that seems intent on not taking itself too seriously. I see that as not only a positive, but something to look forward to in the years to come and I imagine fans of the franchise might feel the same.

Playground Games has not confirmed a release window for Fable but has stated that the reboot will be available upon Xbox Game Pass once it launches on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC.
