Wizards of the Coast has announced new partnerships with their Universes Beyond collaborations for Magic: The Gathering, notably bringing both Final Fantasy and Fallout into its release lineup over the next two years. The announcement came during GenCon 2023 via a panel focused on the collectible card game’s 30th anniversary celebrations. For its official announcements, check out the timestamps 13:20 for Fallout and 26:27 for Final Fantasy respectively below:

The crossover with Fallout is set to launch sometime in March 2024. The release comprises a set of four pre-constructed Commander decks, with each deck representing a faction within the post-apocalyptic universe developed by Bethesda Game Studios. These could include the tech-focused Brotherhood of Steel, the synth-friendly Railroad, or the ravaged Institute, translated to the complex mechanics of Magic: The Gathering. Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that there will be no additional boosters or sets to supplement the decks.

The collaboration with Final Fantasy is set to release sometime in 2025. Wizards of the Coast has stated that this will be a “tentpole booster release” in partnership with Square Enix, where players will be able to buy booster packs of an expansive set upon its launch. The cards released will span the entirety of the franchise, from Final Fantasy to Final Fantasy XVI.

These popular RPG franchises join other popular IPs in the Universes Beyond partnerships, including releases for Warhammer 40K and Lord of the Rings, alongside upcoming collaborations with Doctor Who, Assassin’s Creed, and Jurassic Park.

As a casual Magic: The Gathering player, this news brings me no small amount of joyful curiosity. Presumably, each release will bring original artwork of the most popular aspects of both franchises, and I can’t wait to see what that means, in terms of unique artists. Perhaps, some card art graced by Yoshitaka Amano or Leonard Boyarsky? One can only dream…

We’ll keep an eye here on any new developments closer to their release windows here at RPGFan, of that you can be sure!
