Square Enix has announced that its upcoming mobile game Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis will launch on iOS and Android devices on September 7th. The game is currently open for pre-registration via the App Store and Google Play. So far, over one million players have pre-registered, unlocking a suite of in-game currency, unique items, and gacha draw tickets for all players upon its global release.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is a free-to-play game that offers a new way for players to experience key events within the entire Final Fantasy VII timeline, anchored firmly within the canon of its key titles including its original 1997 release and prequel Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

The game is set in chapters, depicting its story between a blocky, polygonal style reminiscent of its retro-origins on PlayStation and detailed character models within combat. Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis uses the series’ classic Active Time Battle system for combat when appropriate, with players upgrading their weapons, characters, and gear through gacha gameplay and combat rewards.

Additionally, Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis promises exclusive story content penned by Kazushige Nojima (Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VII Remake) that focuses on a young, short-haired Sephiroth in his early career within SOLDIER as well as the paramilitary organisation itself.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis seems to continue the recontextualization of Final Fantasy VII and its canon in the modern gaming space. If its pre-registration numbers are any indication, it seems that many players want to continue and support that movement upon its release.
