Falcom Mulling Trails in the Sky Trilogy Re-Releases on Modern Platforms

In the same shareholders’ meeting where The Legend of Heroes: Kai no Kiseki — Farewell, O Zemuria was presented, Ys and Trails developer Nihon Falcom held a Q&A session where the possibility of bringing the Trails in the Sky trilogy to modern platforms was brought up.

Twitter/X user @michsuzu specifically asked the developers if there are plans to bring the trilogy to existing platforms for wider accessibility.

Q. This is an inquiry about about some of Falcom’s back-catalog – the Trails series’ original games, the Trails in the Sky trilogy, are currently unplayable on modern console platforms. While you can play them on a PlayStation 3, or a PlayStation Vita, are there any plans to develop a version of the titles for modern console hardware?

A. We’re always thinking about ways to make our earlier titles available to more players. As for “Trails in the Sky”, we’ve noticed strong demand for the title both domestically and abroad; as such, we too want to figure out a way to make it available once again for modern platforms. While the Trails series has grown quite long, we consider “Trails in the Sky” to be our own ideal entry point to the series. We want to re-release the game in some form, so we ask our fans to wait a little while longer while we consider our options.

In the West, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC and Trails in the Sky SC can be played on PC and PlayStation Portable. The final entry, Trails in the Sky the 3rd, is only available on PC. In Japan, however, all three games were also released on the PS3 and PS Vita. They even got remakes!

I think that the Sky games being locked to certain platforms is the main reason why some players can’t even get started on this franchise. Judging by our series timeline, the Sky trilogy is where you want to start.

I mean, it’s up to you if you want to follow chronological order or jump into whichever title you feel like. You’ll want to peek into our Trails primer if you want other options to get into the series.
