CD Projekt Red had a quality end to its 2023 sales calendar as the Phantom Liberty expansion to Cyberpunk 2077 has reached five million copies sold, according to the developer’s Twitter/X page.
Phantom Liberty launched on September 26th, 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC and no doubt contributed to Cyberpunk 2077 being among the top downloads on Steam, the PS Store, and the Microsoft Store in recent months.
Aleks Franiczek loved Phantom Liberty so much that he named it his Game of the Year on a recent Retro Encounter episode. Check out his glowing review of the expansion.
It’s easy to forget that under this avalanche of recent highlights lies a game that desperately needed resuscitation immediately after launch.
Nearly a decade in the making, Cyberpunk 2077 debuted on December 10th, 2020 to relative critical acclaim. Eight days later, after a disastrous first week that saw reports of game-breaking glitches and epileptic seizures, Sony pulled the digital version from the PS Store and offered refunds to anyone who wanted one. The result was so shocking that even The Guardian commented on the situation.
Thankfully, all of this negative press is in the rearview with the success of Phantom Liberty; CD Projekt Red’s reputation has been (mostly) restored, and cyberpunks can look forward to the minor buzz of a potential sequel on the distant horizon.
As always, whether it’s hardware, software, or DLC, keep tuned to the RPGFan news feed for all things RPG.
