What if a game followed a twelve-year-old child tasked to manage the gate to a fantasy kingdom, but without the seriousness of Papers, Please? That is exactly what developer Hilltop Studio has set out to do with the adventure game Lil’ Guardsman, now revealed to launch on January 23rd. In it, players are tasked with solving various puzzles to save the kingdom of Sprawl.

Check out the release date trailer below:

While taking inspiration from Papers, Please for some of Lil’ Guardsman‘s gameplay, co-founder Artiom Komarov also listed The Secret of Monkey Island and Grim Fandango as influences for the humor they aimed for.

As the 12-year-old Lil, you cover your dad’s shift as a gatekeeper to allow or deny people entry to the kingdom. The game features over 100 characters for you to choose if they enter or not. The money you earn allows you to upgrade your guardsman kit to interrogate the people at your gate better. Your choice can impact the fate of the kingdom, but if you hate your decision, your trusty Chronometer3000 allows you to rewind time.

Lil’ Guardsman launches on January 23rd for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Stay tuned to RPGFan for more!
