Square Enix has announced that pre-orders are now live for the upcoming Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. The announcement came during the most recent Nintendo Partner Direct Showcase, giving players a brief glimpse into customisation options, pixellated Slimes, and a new vocation!

As seen above, players will be able to customise the appearance of their party members once they have selected their vocations—the job system recurring across several major Dragon Quest titles. This will include both their colour palettes, their voices, and more. Beyond that, a new vocation was revealed in the form of the Monster Wrangler, a bestial warrior who uses abilities inspired by the monsters they face to bring healing or hurt.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is the first chronological entry in the “Erdrick Trilogy,” which also includes Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II. It is a full-scale remake of Dragon Quest III that overhauls its 16-bit aesthetics with modern pixel-art stylings in the vein of Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy.

Players will take on the role of the Hero who is the child of Ortega, a legendary figure and warrior. They are summoned by the King of Aliahan to rid the world of an ancient evil known as Baramos, who Ortega perished fighting many years ago in the heart of a fiery volcano. In that quest, they will leave the safety of their home and venture across the world, solving problems, recruiting allies, and fighting in classic turn-based battles.

As someone who has barely touched Dragon Quest as a series, I’m deeply curious about diving into this upon its release. It’s also heartening to know that it will eventually be followed by the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake set to release sometime in 2025! A perfect portable game in autumn leading into the chill of winter, no doubt!
